Cast iron crack repair.

Post by Rimmo »

Stitching or spray weld, which is better for repairing cracked cast iron in your experience and how long does the repair last. This is for a crack on the outside of a block and starting in a threaded hole. Also if spray welding is used for this type of repair on a machined block does the heat distort the machined bore.

What are we talking for a threaded hole, a high stress location like a motor mount or bell housing?

My opinion 3 methods Muggy weld, Eazy weld, or drill and stitch. Spray weld will not hold. Have done all three.

I did a SBC boat engine that had cracks on both sides of the tappet chamber from freezing. they were stick welded with a nickel rod and had no problems.

Not a high stress location. The crack starts in the drain plug hole.

Lock N Stitch would be the best option there.
No stressed area and easy to do and make look like it never happened :D

Tapered stich repair plugs would be my first choice for that type of repair.

X3 then on the plug & stich repair assisted with some fluid weld from Goodson supply, or Sliverseal.
