Old kiwi Pro Topline 200cc iron SBC heads

Post by KnightEngines » Thu Sep 07, 2017 1:23 am

Just doing a set of these for a 388 cube (3.8x4.03") SBC street/strip engine, I'd heard they were good things but haven't seen any of the 200cc ones in the past.
In stock form they had 2.02/1.6" valves & were only ok.
I stuck 2.08" intakes in & gave them a decent rub - they've ended up at 216cc with a 2.1" MCSA

What was suprising was just how easy & how much they picked up, damn they are a good for a basic iron stock port/valve location head:

Flow
lift - stock 2.02" - ported 2.08"
.1 - 61 - 69.5
.2 - 116 - 135.5
.3 - 159 - 187
.4 - 201 - 233
.5 - 235 - 269
.55 - 245 - 284
.6 - 252 - 299
.65 - 255 - 309
.7 - 257 - 320
.75 - 260 - 324

Exhaust:
.1 - 57 - 59
.2 - 99 - 108
.3 - 132 - 137
.4 - 159 - 166
.5 - 175 - 186
.55 - 180 - 192
.6 - 185 - 197
.65 - 189 - 201
.7 - 192 - 204
.75 - 193 - 207

I'll put some pics up in a few days when I've finished porting.

Mr Pullman had some smart cookies working for him...pity he couldn't keep the company on the straight and narrow...

Well looking at things in terms of running .650" lift you picked up 21% more flow for only a port volume gain of 8%.
I hope the motor can make 7500 as I think that will where things are happening best for that cid!

Are these heads available today? Did they become the RHS heads and now maybe EQ?

Yes, Comp bought ProTopline heads and became RHS and then I believe the PT guys started EQ, I have all three in my shop and there is little if any difference in them.

RHS took over the company and manufacturing but that program was short lived about 5 years then they were no longer produced.
It really sucked as they were the very best iron head ever produced. In out of the box form they worked very well and with little man they were steller.
EQ got heads cast in the same place but dropped their lines almost the same time RHS tanked their iron HP heads.

Now aluminum is mostly taken over. Dart has some good iron HP heads but they need more work the the aussie heads ever did but you must work with whats available.

Bottom end will be good, but she'll be a flat tappet - will see a lot of street miles & maintenance of a roller won't suit the owner, hyd roller won't turn the rpm required.
Using 1.6/1.5 rocker combo & a cam something like 264/270 on 107, lift will be a tad over .600"

The other limit will be intake manifold - have to use a vic jnr for hood clearance, but I do have free reign to port it as much as required (yay, looking forward to that).

Comp will be 11:1 or a little over, carb will be a QF850 & it'll run on pump swill.

Aiming for 550hp @ under 7000rpm. That'll be enough to run in the 10's - which is as quick as it can go at the local track without a cage.

Looks like this is gonna get a solid roller rather than flat tappet - Crane street roller lobes, 264/270 on 106, .620/.580" lift after lash with the 1.6/1.5 rockers.

Why can't a sb run 7000 with a HR, they're doing it with bb?

I did it 20 + years ago. Before I knew it wasn't possible.

I want it to carry past 7000 & in the past I've seen plenty of hyd rollers start to taper off above 6500.
The cam is easy on the valve train & does not require a bunch of seat pressure, life span should exceed a flat tappet with .390+ lobes & 1.6 ratio rockers - which was the other option to feed it.
