sbc L2327 .030 forged pistons

Post by rfoll »

I have a set of these new in the box from some horse trading. A search reveals these to be intended for use with 400 rods and crank. Piston and pin weight is 656 grams. They use 1/16" rings, compression distance is 1.56. The box indicates .005" minimum clearance. I am wondering if these were of a specific weight to build a short rod 383 without the need to rebalance. Do they have much value as a 350 piston, or should I just sell them?

Are you thinking of using a 400 rod??

They do appear to be similar to the 2490, but the advertisement of the 2327 as being a 383 piston intrigues me. That is why I was thinking it was intended for a cut down factory 400 crank and rods without the necessity of a rebalance, or possibly a special skirt design. I don't have any 383 cranks, so if I used them it would be for a flat top 350.

I would think the pin height is going to be the most important factor as to what engine size/rod length combo it will fit.

Per my old FM catalog, these are exactly the same as the 2490, just heavier. I suspect it had less machine work done to remove weight (and save $$$)

when building a 400 rod 383 with 350 pistons. the 350 piston skirts hit the edge of the crank counterweight so you need to shorten or notch the skirt next to the pistons tail. These piston are made so they clear so they will fit a 350 with room to spare.

Thanks, for the replies, most mirror my thoughts. I'm not much of a 383 fan, for the expense of building a new engine, I'm more likely to use one of my 400 blocks. If anyone is interested, I will give someone here a decent deal on them.
