So grasp the handpiece, cradle the shaft? What about the balls?GARY C wrote:...piece in my right hand and let the shaft float between my fingers on my left hand for better control...it takes a little calas build up
I have an old single cut aluminum oval head 6" burr that I have no problem ruining. It's put it's dues in for 15+ years on random crap. Now about chipping off the edges of the burr? How?

Chipping comes with use! I would not intensionally chip a burr. They wear fast enough.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong. I've never chipped a burr on aluminum.Carnut1 wrote:Chipping comes with use! I would not intensionally chip a burr. They wear fast enough.

Maybe I'll chuck it up in my big Dewalt grinder and try to turn one of these Ford aluminum blocks I have into a pile of shavings this weekend!Carnut1 wrote:You're obviously not trying hard enough!nickpohlaandp wrote:Maybe I'm doing it wrong. I think I can only get 2 sets of heads out of some of these junk burrs on the market before they chip.

Just lock the trigger on, stick it "shaft" first into a bucket of heavy scrap metal and plug it in for 10 or 15 seconds, you can probably get the bend and chip all at once.nickpohlaandp wrote:Maybe I'll chuck it up in my big Dewalt grinder and try to turn one of these Ford aluminum blocks I have into a pile of shavings this weekend!Carnut1 wrote:You're obviously not trying hard enough!nickpohlaandp wrote:

Chad try buckeye carbide. Made in U.S.A. Ebay, decent price, very sharp, last if you break em in slow. Try to high speed them brand new they will bite. Thanks, Charliecspeier wrote:I think I can only get 2 sets of heads out of some of these junk burrs on the market before they chip.

Chad,
I can recommend these from thread on Shop Talk. I bought some and they are very good from my findings.
CIRCO FILE out of New York cut the Burrs for Mondello. I had called them because I knew Joe bought them there. Even so, I honored that & wouldn't go around him.
But, I went ahead and asked him if I could go ahead & buy direct, since Mary closed the shop. They told me Joe had the knack of running his place that apparently could not be duplicated.
Phone # 516-922-1848.
He asked me what I had been doing for resharpening. I told him I had given up on that long ago due to the lack of the vendors knowing how to properly cut into the root. They just won't cut. He guaranteed the burrs enough to give our money back if not satisfied.
I sent him a load of old carbides. Pretty darn impressive. Those boys sharpen them by hand. Very good.

Mine is not the ultimate technique by a long shot. You will get better 'how-too' advice from Charlie or Chad and if you squeeze hard enough also maybe, from Frankenshaft - his finishes look top notch.AMXstocker1 wrote:what are you using to apply the rough texture? is it just a curse carbide, or are you damaging the bit in any fashion to get the desired effect?

Ditto, I have had really good results with Buckeye in the past.Carnut1 wrote:Chad try buckeye carbide. Made in U.S.A. Ebay, decent price, very sharp, last if you break em in slow.
