sbc assualt/proheader heads stud girdle & stud spacing question

Post by smokie »

i have a set of assault racing/proheader heads for a sbc & i'm trying to figure out if i need a stud girdle. the motor is a 383 with a comp cams xr294hr (Comp hydraulic roller is an XR294HR with 242/248 degrees of duration at 0.050, 0.540/0.562-inch lift with 1.5 rockers, and 110 lobe sep.) & the matching springs Comp 987-16. (Specs: 121 lbs @ 1.8", 343 lbs @ 1.2". (370 lbs/in)). i'm using arp 7/16s studs & scorpion 1.5 roller rockers. i don't plan on turning it over 6,500 rpm unless it just likes it (i doubt it will). do i need a stud girdle?

also, i'm unsure about the rocker stud spacing on these assault heads. i have read one guy say that a standard stud girdle won't fit because they moved the rocker studs .030" further apart. can anyone verify this?

thanks

YOU DO NOT NEED A STUD GIRDLE

Agree with the both posts above, no girdle necessary.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Those 987 springs aren't going to get the job done though, would recommend using a set of 914's instead. Not sure about your installed hgt numbers on the valves but you should have 140/150# on the seat with these SB hyd-retro's. Also definitely some L/W tool-steel retainers, no C.M.'s!

these spring won't work? they are what comp cams recommends with the cam i'm using, although i do realize that doesn't mean shit. lol

what did you mean by no C.M.'s?

No plain steel retainers. Lightweight tool steel or titanium I believe is what he meant. I girdle is not needed but what could adding one hurt on a hydraulic engine. Not like it makes valve adjustment a pain. I would think it would stabilize the valvetrain some and possibly act like a valve cover baffle, keep some more oil out of the breather and on the rockers and springs where it would be doing good.

I guess it really all depends upon someone's definition of "NEED".

IMO the above post of around 150# seat and around 400# over the nose is closer to what you need; and what I use. A good beehive will get you there.

the cam is on a cast iron core. would more spring pressure hurt it?

If you find that you need mre spring load for max rpm
try comp 977-16 or crane 96870-16
Shim to around 1.850" - 1.875" ish
to get the seat and open spring load you want.
If the hyd roller lifters are too ticky at idle
use a thicker oil or increase installed spring height a bit
more to decrease load a hair.
Find the happy spot between hyd lifter hyd collapse
and max rpm limit... (valve control)
More than what you need is not better.
