Valve spring chamfering
Ok seen this done in the past in articles or w/e. I got 9 of my new valve springs that don't fit the retainers, so how much can I chamfer safely? Any preference on the tool PAC, Manley, other?

Re: Valve spring chamfering
Actually they are beehive springs, anyone use a large cone shape stone? What grit are the PAC or Manley tools?

Re: Valve spring chamfering
you can do it with a seat grinding stone. put a pilot in the spring side of the head, set the spring in its pocket. use a Sioux valve seat stone and holder and hit the spring like your grinding a seat. the spring will self center, watch you dont turn the spring blue,

It's amazing how many folks do not check this, my hats off to you!
I had one Mopar customer that I ported his heads for and for literally years he was chasing a Hi rpm break up above 7500.
When he finally after changing , up grading and chasing everything but the valve springs , he finally pulled the headsand he found that tight fitting retainers had busted the top winding of the inner springs and the thickness of the out spring was masking the damage!

You can cut a man's tongue from his mouth, but that does not mean he’s a liar, it just shows that you fear the truth he might speak about you!
Re: Valve spring chamfering
Be sure to polish any part of the spring that has been touched by the stone. Any stressriser can cause spring failure! I always polish any sharp edge on springs. In this case I would machine the retainer and not the spring! Much less chance of failure that way. Retainer must be radiused and polished also. Thanks, Charlie

Sry no machinery other than basic garage stuff, so I'll be giving it a shot with my cheap drill press. Good point on the bluing I'll be sure to go slow n not overheat the top coil.
I may try another new set of springs I bought these ones too long ago to hassle with replacement. The set I used before, only a couple retainers were tight n prob should of got a slight chamfer.
Looks like the Goodson tool has 80 or 120 grit replacement cones for it's tool, that looks just like the Manley. I can get cone 36, 60, 120 stones from Mcmaster Carr and maybe flapwheel it after.
I need about .003-.004 clearance to fit the retainers, the wire is plenty thick.

Re: Valve spring chamfering
Any suggestion on flap-wheel grits for finish or other method?

Re: Valve spring chamfering
I always chamfer the end coils of the springs to stop them chafing the retainer & the guide boss. If it is only 0.003-4", just use an emery roll in a drill or die grinder.
Re: Valve spring chamfering
I'm gonna give the cone stones n flap-wheel a shot, I'll try on a few old springs 1st. Also gonna get another set of springs but my luck I'll get another bad batch n still not have enough to do both heads LOL
