Total seal gas ported ring spacers for 3.685" bore?

Post by KnightEngines »

Looking for a new ring package for restricted road race category, I've contacted a local supplier who deals with TS, but I won't hear back till Monday at the earliest so I figured I'd ask here.

Ring grooves are 1/16, 1/16, 3/16
Bore is 3.685"

What I'd like is a gas ported top ring spacer to be able to use a .8mm top ring, plain ring spacer to allow the same for second - or as a second choice a lower tension napier 1/16" second ring & a lower tension 3/16" oil ring (or spacer & thinner oil ring).
Vac pumps etc are no allowed, so oil ring tension cannot be too low, it'll probably take some experimenting to find how low we can get away with.

Does anyone know if TS can do this sort of stuff in a 3.685" bore?

PS - what sort of gain should I be seeing with this sort of setup? - motors are around 180hp @ 5500rpm now. A 5+hp gain would be very well received.

Will do, have made contact with Keith.

Looking doable.
We'll be doing back to back chassis dyno testing, test as is, switch ring pack, test again without removing car from dyno.

A little dilatory on follow-up Knight, but did you ever get that back-to-back dyno data?

Yeah, sort of, didn't use the gas ported rings, but gas ports, spacers & thin rings was worth 2hp.

Was that picked up on a chassis dyno or engine?

FWIW, our Studebaker V8s could benefit from a similar diameter and ring combination. From conversations with Keith, Total Seal will make any diameter and any thickness ring and or spacer. However, TS cost to do these one-off/custom has been more than my customers will pay.
