Rectifying slight rust on crank shaft journals

Post by xanadu »

Removed a crankshaft from a 308 Holden and sprayed in with Inox and Soft seal.
Left it for a week and to my surprise all journals have a very slight amount of rust spotting.
Cannot feel it with your finger nail. Anyway tips on rectifying this without a regrind.
Thanks.

Is it a cast Crank?

It is a cast crank. Has done 19000miles since a regrind.
All sorted thanks.

Cast cranks due to there Carbon nodules as part of there make up need to be polished in a certain direction to not raise up the Carbon nodules.
Bearing failure can take place when done otherwise, or if nothing else increased oil temps will take place.
I would have a Crank grinding shop polish it if I where you.

One part molasses and nine parts water. Let soak a few days. No more rust. Find old Hot Rod article on rust removal using molasses on internet. Also, other good info on the net.

Molasses is used in cattle feed. So, if you have something large to clean like rusted door panels you can find molasses in quantities for a cheap price at local co-op.

Im going to try this out on my old stock camshaft, curious if it works.
I tried a so called marine rust converter and it was rubbish

The feed mill type of molasses will work, I've soaked rusty body panels in it and it does work ok but takes awhile. You'll have no luck if there is any oil on the cam though. It loosens up the rust but you'll still need to scrub the surface for the deeply pitted areas.

Just mixed my molasses batch for 2017... soaking old ford brakes, a crank and a DeSoto Hemi head as we speak...
