Pontiac 400 screw in studs

Post by ProPower engines »

Hey guys
I am trying to locate a replacement screw in stud to convert some press in studs in a pont. 400.
The stud hole is .434" with the stock press in stud removed making it necessary to install inserts into the heads to reduce the hole to 7/16 X 14 thread.

I don't see anything readily available that uses a 1/2" thread that will work on these heads.

Other then inserts any suggestions on studs

Hi Dave, ARP has them for the Pontiac application.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Part number, 290-7201, should be available?

I did see something but was unsure if they were applicable to the pontiac head issue.
I will contact ARP and get more details tomorrow.

Are these the studs that had the oil coming through the middle of them to lube the rockers and balls??

Same exact stud design but no center oiling to rockers.
The later heads I have are not drilled for the rocker oiling.

Screw in stud

The boss may have to be milled down to account for the hex head of the stud.
(to get the correct height for the rocker ball)

John, later heads that have the guide plates bolted to the heads I believe dont have to be milled. The early heads without guide plates usually do if a shouldered stud. There were studs out there that were screwin but no shoulder that would not require to be milled.I think Isky made them.Tom

They are on the way now :D

Thanks again

As mentioned ARP makes a 7/16 stud with 1/2 bottom. Don't recall having to mill the bosses on '66 up Pontiacs when converting to screw ins.

Pioneer made 3/8" studs without the hex. They had a 7/16 bottom. Number was something like RS-348?
