Pennzoil, Use by date
I just found out shelf life of oil, Any of you know how to read the date on pennzoil quarts. Like "1 Dec. 16 2004 or 3 Jan 07 1259 Oldhead
Quicker then most
Re: Pennzoil, Use by date
You have to cal pennzoil, each oil company has there own number system, most will say 7-10 years shelf life, but how you store it has a big impact on if it degrades on the shelf or not

I do make a point to rotate my stock. However, the stuff is 65,000.000+ years old when it's pumped out of the ground, so I figure if I can pour it out of the jug...good enough.

Re: Pennzoil, Use by date
I wouldn't worry about expiration dates on oil. Expiration dates are just a scam to get people to buy more stuff.

I bought about 90 quarts of nos Pennzoil and Valvoline at a garage sale several years ago... mostly sm to sg API specs. If my kids hadn't used it all up I'd still be using it. Sure looked ok when pouring it into my ride.
I did manage to hide the 10 or so cans of real GM EOS one can of which I'll be using in my Jeep engine project this weekend.

Re: Pennzoil, Use by date
After all these decades this is the first I have heard of a born on date for oil. Must be a 21st century idea from the bean counters.
I have a hard time with the idea of something in a sealed can deteriorating. It's not spent uranium.
IF the modern plastic bottles are leaching into the oil and causing this concern it's still not a problem. That turns it into STP>

Well, you can listen to all the opinions you want or you can spend $25 and ship a sample to an oil lab, i use blackstone, they can tell you if your numbers are still good, good for checking used oil too, if its a race engine i want to know my oil is good, if its been stored in the sun in a hot shed for a decade and constantly being heated and cooled where do you think that condensation is going

Zums,
Easy to say. Have you done just that with a 20 yr old bottle of oil?
Even better would be a 40 year old Can of oil

Re: Pennzoil, Use by date
Who would use 40 yr old oil in their engine? I send samples periodically, last one i sent was 8 yr old synthetic to get checked and it was still in good shape, but i store my oil in a basement where the temp dosent vary much and is not in direct sunlight, i picked up a can of sealed quakerstate out of an old shed for quenching and when i opened it it wasnt the color of oil when new and had stuff that looked like specs of shaving cream in it, would you use it?Dave Koehler wrote:Zums,

You like really old oil? These lab results may be of interest.....

Zums,
I have no issue with your visual interpretation.
I just wanted to verify that you have never had on the shelf old, but sealed oil tested.
Therefore we still don't know if the BOD is legit or not.
I just checked 4 different brands I have on the shelf. Conventional and synthetic, std and race.
Not one of them has a "use before date" on them.
One would think if this was really a worrisome thing there would be a note on the bottle.

Interesting historical read but does not answer the question at hand.Truckedup wrote:You like really old oil? These lab results may be of interest.....

Do they or BTOG have a paper on BOD?

Re: Pennzoil, Use by date
If you can first explain how what you are concerned about "condensing" gets into in increasing amounts (?), in I assume a fully oil filled non leaked sealed container, I might be able to explain.zums wrote: if its been stored in the sun in a hot shed for a decade and constantly being heated and cooled where do you think that condensation is going
Tom
The storing "in the sun" is more of a scare tactic in this discussion, and has as much bearing on the shelf life as not also store oil inside the containment shell of a nuclear reactor.
