Z-28 Damper and Flywheel questions.
I am NOT going to competition my 325" engine so will the stock 302 Z-28 damper and 350SS 11" stick flywheel assembly be OK?
My old junk301 did fine way back then up to 7,500 rpm many times! Stuff seemed to do fine way back then is why I ask.
Up about 8,000 rpm several time's? I do want a scatter-shield though.
Damn, the SFI stuff is pricey is why I ask...
Just tell me to buy SFI stuff and I will is all here..

Summit has a very nice SFI balancer for under $130 and their billet flywheels are right at $200.
Re: Z-28 Damper and Flywheel questions.
My stepbrother just put a summit sfi balancer on his 355, it seemed decent for the money. Works fine so far, his car runs a best of 6.58 at 104mph in the 1/8th.

try and find a swapmeet can
use a driveshaft loop
San Gabriel Drags in the 50's
Ford coupe comes to the line
you can see the driver pumping his moon tank
flywheel lets go
Moon tank explodes
windows smoke over black and orange
Driver Bails
you can see his Pack rolled up in his T shirt arm
He dies
Strip bans tanks in the passenger compartment
10 years later Sorikin dies and Garlits looses his foot
be safe

Normally wouldn't answer a thread like this.
Don't be an idiot, Get SFI parts!

Re: Z-28 Damper and Flywheel questions.
In the early 80s I ran a 68 Z/28 in NHRA stock class and had problems with the outer part of the damper moving on the inner. Might want to keep that information in mind. I didnt have an option as far as running it, you do.
Re: Z-28 Damper and Flywheel questions.
I would not run an old damper and old cast iron flywheel, even if the engine never sees more than 5000 RPM. Old = stressed & fatigued.
A name brand SFI flywheel is cheap insurance.

Re: Z-28 Damper and Flywheel questions.
My buddy lost an outer dampener ring on a 67 Z/28 Camaro after a Moroso small diameter drive pulley was installed. We figured the factory pulley was helping to keep the ring on and the small diameter one allowed enough forward movement to finally tear the bonding through. Such a rare car! didn't deserve its epic fate at the hands of teenagers....this was long before anyone knew how rare they were.

Re: Z-28 Damper and Flywheel questions.
I had a friend that wanted a SFI approved harmonic balancer for his Z-28 engine, however, he wanted an OEM look.
I ended using Powerbond Part Number PB1012SS (6" Dia).
Powerbond also has an 8" Dia under Part Number PB1046SS.
For a flywheel, I installed an SFI approved 11" steel flywheel.

Change them both. High RPM 302 Z-28 needs quality parts. Be safe and change the old.

Those Powerbond units look like a nice mix of safety and OEM look.nhrastocker wrote:I had a friend that wanted a SFI approved harmonic balancer for his Z-28 engine, however, he wanted an OEM look. I ended using Powerbond Part Number PB1012SS (6" Dia).

From the fall of 1959 to the fall of 1961 I broke 4 cranks in a 270 HP/283 and a crank in a 340HP/327 spinning them to 7200 RPMs. I don't have a lot of faith in factory balancers when they are pushed beyond factory design parameters. That experience started my education in harmonics.
