hard seats in green diamond engine

Post by machinedave »

Has anyone installed new exhaust seats in a 1948 green diamond flathead 6 cylinder engine? Or perhaps I should ask has anyone cut into water installing them?

No access to having the bowls sonic tested?

Why does it need to have hardened seats?

The seats have severe pitting. I can make bigger valves if I have to but would rather install new seats if I can do it without finding water.

I would have to think that you have the needed .200" of depth to work with, and this amount of depth holds up with racing spring pressure so tractor spring should be cake!
Goodson supply sells a product for sealing cracks in heads and using during seat installs where water jacket issues may take place.

1.440" head, 5.560" length, .3715" stem. I don't believe they are sodium or iconel

So the Intake seats can be re- cut and work out?

Let me guess, finding a better block is like Hens teeth?

that's what I remembered really long valves
exhausts paired next to each other
you would think that that vintage casting would be thick enough but get a sonic tester and find out
most of my flathead experience was ford and Chrysler
wonder why the intakes and not the exhausts>
best to also check the cam on a cam doc and maybe update camgrind and springs

I have most of my experience with ford and Chrysler stuff too, with a healthy dose of Continental mixed in and I put hard seats in most of them.

But the green diamond deal IDK. I'd be scared without a sonic check. I'm a bit of a chicken though.

What does it look like if you hit it with a stone without doing anything else? Looking at the picture I think it might not be as bad as it appears once you knock off the rust that's sticking up from the surface of the existing seat.
