Crank damage?

Post by BOOT »

If you drop a sbc shortblock a short distance and it kinda lands on the forged crank snout what would you do?

edit: to be clear more of a straight down and it landed on a wood edge and dent that wood.

Also to be clear not on the front end of the crank(bolt face) but the shortblock to go straight down, so he shank side of the snout.

Pull the crank and set it in V blocks and check the run out.

Actually, you could put a dial indicator on the snout and roll it over and look at T.I.R.

<EDIT> Written before seeing above post.
If it doesn't otherwise need to come apart, just check run out near the end of the snout with the crank in the block. I don't think there could be an issue with bearings; the contact area is such that the impact psi would be very low.

Yah I was thinking at least check run-out, thx for the replies.

It's a brand new forged shortlbock, scat crank. I asked on another forum but I wanted to word it a bit diff here and compare responses. Anyways it was shipped and appears that the straps were broke or left off. The bag shows it was deff sliding back n forth into the crate and hitting on both ends of the crankshaft. The wood edge on the front snout that is dented is a about 1/3-1/2 up the crank so it would had to have been air born some and landed on that edge.

This is one of those I know the answer moments but it was a good deal so I want to be certain before I pass it up. Prob return only and no exchange, not a good enough deal to replace the crank if damaged. Manufacturer says they don't think it's damaged and it was shipped freight in the back of a semi fyi.
