Solid Lift Cams w/ high Seat Pressure

Post by Todd H »

Hi guys, I'm new to to forum so if this has been coverd before please try to bear with me. I have heard that the Nascar motors run around 250 lbs of valve seat pressure with a flat tappet cam. Is this true? If so how do they manage to do with with out welding the cam to the lifters? Todd

I have a friend that works at one of the engine shops for one of the top cup teams and they are running around 160 at the seat and low 400s over the nose you have to remember they are runing EXTREMLY lite components such as small stem valves and the springs they run are super exspensive.

On the other hand we have some engines with the Schubeck lifters and cast cams with 200 at the seat and 490 over the nose so far we have had no problems and we have also been using the tool steel lifters form Andy at Precision Products and have been runing 170 to 180 at the seat and up to 430 over the nose with no problems.

Also remember that a NASCAR flat tappet cam has little in common in terms of construction, with an 'X' brand solid flat tappet you can buy from Summit Racing.

I was just wondering if maybe they have added oil lines to spray the lobes on the cam. I got the seat pressure from what I consider reliable information. Todd

I've got a Ford block in the shop that came from Roger Penskes shop before they went to the Dodge and the Cam tunnel is all inclosed on this block and the cam is submerged in oil. If you would like some pics of this block email me and I will get some for you.

I don't know about now, but a few years ago cam lobes were inlayed with tungstin (sp) or other hard material, and then ground to spec. I don't know if the lifters were doctored as well.
