New subaru billet blocks

Post by KnightEngines »

Doing the final machining & blueprinting on these things, this is the 1st set of the new Willall Racing billet EJ Subaru cases to be built for a private customer, they are #6 off the line (I prepped up #2 as a promo engine a week or so ago).

S&J Automotive are the Aus/NZ distributors for these - I do contract work for them, so I get to play with all the cool Subaru toys before most people.

No more beat to hell mains tunnels, no more dropped sleeves, no more "WTF is gonna break this time" wondering, these suckers are tough.
Extra mains bolts, larger dia outer case bolts, fully dowelled mains, 14mm head studs, better oiling, heaps more metal where it counts & the metal is a bunch better than the cheese Subaru make their blocks out of.

The #1 evaluation engine has gone past 1000hp already with pretty basic heads & stock STI cams (40psi boost on E85).

This one is a bit nicer, 2.7 stroker with Manley billet crank, turbo tuff rods & coated pistons with thick wall pins.
I'm doing heads for it next week, big port job, +1mm supertech valves (Inconel exhausts), Kelford cams & valve train.

Wow! That looks really cool. Did Subaru not offer some sort of a racing block before?

I wish I had ignored this post. :(

I'm sick thinking of all the money I spent trying to make these blocks work, for the reasons you mentioned.

That is a beautiful piece.

Take a look at nasioc.com/forum membership, then ask the question again. :D

Oh my. I like very much. Looks like it eliminates ALL of the EJ weak spots.

The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure the majority of rally sanctioning bodies require OE blocks so this is useless for them. So it's just for all of the usual high power import people, not the minority of rallyists.

It's inconceivable to me that this won't be an OEM block by next year.

1st batch is all sold - mostly to road race, hillclimb & drag guys.

Production is ramping up now, evaluation & R&D is all done, couple of minor changes to the CNC program from the 1st 2 blocks to allow for easier final machining & assembly.

#2 engine fired up this morning, it's pretty much the same specs as this one except it runs stock STI cams, exciting times!

S&J automotive is supplying these things anywhere from bare blocks up to complete engine packages, I think Willall racing is the contact for US buyers, Aus/NZ taken care of by S&J's.
I'll be doing the final machining/blueprinting on the short motors & supplying heads for complete engines, S&J's will be doing assembly work.

 So just how hard would it be to build a 6 or even 8 cyl.?

Very nice piece of kit! Looking forward to see what the drag racers can do with it.
