New subaru billet blocks

Re: New subaru billet blocks
Beautiful job from design through to finished product! I don't know how many manufacturers there are worldwide of billet Subaru engines but it's rather interesting that the only 2 serious ones (high HP contenders) I know about both come from South Australia, yours and the BulletBillet. As someone who often has to design and get billet pieces made, the only thing I would have done differently is to make more flat surfaces with fillets as opposed to curved surfaces. Curved surfaces look sexy but require a gazillion passes with small step-over amounts which equals much higher machine time which equals much higher product cost. i.e. continually think when designing, of the machining operations that follow afterwards. Of course none of that means anything if cost isn't a consideration. This is in no way a criticism as it is a top job of top quality.

Re: New subaru billet blocks
Doing a maintenance teardown on the development engine at the moment - it's about to get stepped up & we want to be sure everything is happy before squeezing a bunch more boost into it.
It's the 1st time I've ever pulled a 800+hp Subaru engine apart without wincing & swearing - literally all it needs is a pattern on the bores & fresh rings & bearings, everything in the short motor is mint, bearings could go again but will be changed anyway.
It has been heavily abused for promo videos etc & for durability testing as well as winning every race meet it's been entered in (the driver helps a bit with that - he's really, really good - V8 supercar driver & racing since he was 14).
I'll get some pics up later, but for now here's some light entertainment:

After a quick search, it seems that's a popular application for them.machinedave wrote:Years ago I machined a Subaru engine for a guy and after he paid for it and loaded it up he told me that he was building an experimental airplane and using the Subaru engine in it. Yup. The guy said the entire engine weighed 270 pounds and makes more power than a VW or Corvair engine.midnightbluS10 wrote:After a quick search, it seems that's a popular application for them.machinedave wrote:Years ago I machined a Subaru engine for a guy and after he paid for it and loaded it up he told me that he was building an experimental airplane and using the Subaru engine in it. FINALLY, a block properly colored to make the cost easier to swallow.
