383 sbc help
putting together a 383 sbc with a friend. Using a scat rotating kit. It hits the cam. We are using a comp hyd roller.560 / .580 . We tried retarding the cam 2 and 4 degrees which didn't help. I know we should be using a small base circle cam. We could grind some clearance on the connecting rods. Or try advancing the cam 2 or 4 degrees. Any suggestions?

Re: 383 sbc help
The amount of metal removal usually isn't that much, but if you are using a through bolt rod it is more difficult. torque the rod bolt before you grind. grind all 8 of them to match.

So much to do, so little time...
Re: 383 sbc help
I had to knock the corners off of those rods on my 383, too. I even used a small base circle cam. I guess it is what it is.

Re: 383 sbc help
We got it done last night. Two rods hit and two were very close. Number 1,2,5,6. All it took was a little work with a file. I found a big plastic zip tie makes a great feeler gage. The ones we used were .050 thick and they crush and remain crushed to show your clearance. We used some putty to initially figure out where to file the metal away. thanks for the help guys.

Re: 383 sbc help
Got this engine running last night. Very pleased with it. This engine was meticuously put together and it all paid off. I'm real curious to see what it runs at the track. Its a 385 (.040) with scat rotating kit, AFR 195 heads, comps biggest XE HYD roller, and 11-1 CR. Victor jr. 750 holley street hp carb. The car is a 78 Lemans with a 9" and 4.10 gears, TCI 4000 stall and 2900 pounds without driver.

If you make 575 HP you can make it under the 10.50 range and 135 + MPH. of course there are a ton of variables Like I guessed your track may be at 1300 ft elevation.prairiehotrodder wrote:Got this engine running last night. Re: 383 sbc help
My track is 1500 feet. I'm thinking 575 is quite optimistic but maybe 525 considering the compression ratio. If it runs mid 11's or better we will be happy.

I think you have the potential of a little more than 525 with those heads and cam. If you do all the combustion chamber tricks and clean up the intake ports I think you can expect between 1.4 and 1.5 HP per CI.

Re: 383 sbc help
This motor went 11.3 at 119 a couple weeks ago. I am very pleased with the power and think it has the potential to go into the tens. The owner is installing a transbrake and possibly a better convertor. He got hooked on bracket racing.

Proper gearing and converter should get you close to 11.0.prairiehotrodder wrote:This motor went 11.3 at 119 a couple weeks ago. Your results are what I expected for the combination you put together.
Have fun.
