Pistons are supposed to have a CH of 1.100 and after getting the block bored, will assemble and see where they sit in the bore for height.. then will get the block decked so they sit .003-.000 depending on how square the decks are.. you are right.. a good tight quench is vital.. Gaskets are the Felpro 1011-1's (.041 compressed) I believe.. an AFR recommendation.. and Mike Lewis recommended "Total Seal" file to fit moly rings..

Should make what you are looking for. My 347 put down 375rwhp and 398rwtq. And it's nothing fancy. Just some garage built junk. But, Mike made the cam for it.

Unless the machine work isn't sufficiently smooth.. you would do much better with some MLS style gaskets for this level of build. They're reusable too.. my last set went through 3 rebuilds at 11.5:1 and saw tons of abuse. Pretty cheap insurance when it's all boiled down.Old as Dirt wrote:Pistons are supposed to have a CH of 1.100 and after getting the block bored, will assemble and see where they sit in the bore for height.. then will get the block decked so they sit .003-.000 depending on how square the decks are.. you are right.. a good tight quench is vital.. Thanks groberts101.. I haven't bought any head gaskets yet, so will look into the MLS stuff.. would prefer a bit tighter quench at around .032 to .036 anyway.. have any part numbers/manufacturers for me to research?
Appreciate the heads up..

Checked into the Cometic MLS line.. plenty of choices and bore sizes.. looks like the way to go..
Will make that decision after the block work.. Thanks..

would suggest SRP pro or Mahle piston. very lite and thin ring pack. retorque head after cooldown.

Thanks Daniel, pistons are already ordered.. "Auto Tec" .030 over forged 9.7cc, .275 Dome w/ .927 Chev pin, 458G w/.150" wall full floating pins(128G) with a 1.5,1.5,3.0 mm set of Sealed power moly rings.. Should be 10.6:1CR with the 72cc AFR 185 heads.
These are "Pistonguy's"(Randy) units from here on the sight.. heard nothing but good stuff about them.. should do the trick, under 600.00..
Weights with the rods will put me @ 1689G bobweight for a crank balanced for 1650-1700G.. shouldn't take much to balance it out, at least in the ballpark..
Enjoy the Holiday weekend!

Re: Gathering parts.. mild SBF 347
yep, sorry.. Cometic is what I was referring to. Try to keep the gasket bore size close or perfectly matched to the cylinders overbore. Contrary to what some might say these types of gaskets won't squish into the bore ID like size matched composites will. So, no need to add more crevice volume than is necessary to seal and mate everything up.
Just be sure to have the block machined to acceptable RA for these types of gaskets.. 50 or better for the Cometics, IIRC.

Picked up a few more parts for the build...
Canton road race front sump pan w/windage tray and a 5/8" main girdle/ARP studs.. 9 qts.
Parker Funnelweb copy(will have to hit it with a cartridge roll to clean up some casting flash).. but a good single plane none the less.. 3500-8000rpm
Proform "Black Diamond" 750 HP bodied carb with all the adjustable/changable bleeds/PVCR/4 corner idle/etc..

auto-tec is good too. look into align honing mains and boring the rear main for the late model one piece seal.Old as Dirt wrote:Picked up a few more parts for the build...

Hi Dan.. When I pulled the crank, the main bearings were perfect.. I'll talk to the machinist on Monday and see what he thinks.. if nothing else, it is good insurance..
Re: Gathering parts.. mild SBF 347
my old boss once found .0004" difference in oil clearance switching the old ARP lube to the new. moving to studs and girdle arp lube or other lube plus a different torque value will move things around. lots of folks get away with with just bolting this stuff onOld as Dirt wrote:Hi Dan.. but for what you have going, the best practice is to align hone. $200 is like 2-4% of the total cost? cut for the real seal first.
