.036 quench
I've read a little about this in another post but wanted to start my own, what are everyone's thoughts on this? Specifically a Chevy 383 6500rpm motor good steel rods and a 4.060 bore .036 thick head gasket on a zero deck? I know it's kinda splitting hairs just trying to get compression where I want with what I have. Any info is appreciated, thanks.

What is your piston to wall clearance? You are cutting it close.... I like .040 but you might be ok >Once carbon gets on top of pistons .....

What type of head and where is the spark plug located?

My sixty years of engine building has shown me that the extra close deck is worth NOTHING-- Whey do it ?

OK fair enough just thought I'd run it past ya, I'll go with .040 or so, thanks. Will a 4.060 bore gasket be ok on a 4.030 bore? MlS gasketbigjoe1 wrote:My sixty years of engine building has shown me that the extra close deck is worth NOTHING-- Whey do it ?

Joe, you'd know on high horsepower builds. I do know staying under .050" is worth doing when trying to control ping on lower horsepower, lower RPMs iron head street engines. Different horses for different courses.bigjoe1 wrote:My sixty years of engine building has shown me that the extra close deck is worth NOTHING-- Whey do it ?

Re: .036 quench
That Is what I have seen too. anything like 055 or less seems to work out very well. I never push to see how close I can get

Re: .036 quench
My 5.7in rod, 9.5:1 383 has piston .015 out of bore and .050 gasket thickness. We'll see how this works.
Re: .036 quench
I ran a 4.040" bore 3.5" stroke SBF with the piston .005" out & a .043" compressed gasket for years with no issues. Shifted at 7200 but it hit the 8000 high chip many times on missed shifts before I swapped out the worn out toploader for a C6.
Re: .036 quench
I agree, in highish HP deals not worth chasing it. Run it .040 ish and let it eat!!
However, in a restricted engine, say a 2bbl. deal, it does have some benefit. I have run .030. you better have fairly tight piston to wall though. Piston will touch the head @ 7400. Just "helps" it turn around and go back down!! LOL
