043/043 vs 1/16 1/16 ring packs

Post by evilbanshee »

I posted on here about a year ago bout doing a L88 engine for my Camaro for bracket racing locally.

I decided to go with a 4" stroke . So ill be running 466 CI

Compression should be in the 13.2:1 range.

Trying to decide on a ring package.

What would the hp advantage be going with a 043/043 ring pack vs the 1/16/1/16 pack? approximently ofcourse...

Would it be 5hp? 15hp??

And whats your opinion on going with a 3mm low tension ring vs a high tension??

Thankyou.

With up to about 70 feet per second average piston speed you won't see much difference, if any at all. Higher piston speeds will show some more power with the thinner and lighter rings.

I have seen much more than that. The thin rings with vertical gas ports and a vacuum pump I have seen over 50 more horsepower

Higher piston speeds will show some more power with the thinner and lighter rings

X2 - ring flutter occurs at higher RPM with thinner rings.

By the looks and sounds of things, My piston guy @ CP says go 043/043 and gas ported and I will be going a faster vs a standard 1/16 1/16 no gas ported route.

The motor will be seeing 7-7500 rpm.

Stepping in on above: At high RPM a thick ring has more momentum than a thin one and so as the piston slows approaching TDC, can more easily become unseated from the bottom of the groove. This causes the sealing pressure on the back of the ring to be lost, so the ring 'collapses' (loses much of its loading against the cylinder wall). Happening repeatedly as it does, it is described as 'flutter' and is bad for cylinder sealing and ring durability.

+ Gas ports help stop ring flutter as well by keeping the ring loaded .

Did you change your cylinder wall finish at all?

As compared to:
.043 x 3
1.5 x 3

I Will do whatever the piston/ ring company recommends. The rings came from TOTAL SEAL.
