Better intake carb combo?

Post by 408 Nova »

I have an early model AFR Titan intake, with two of their 1" open cloverleaf plastic spacers on it, and a 950 cfm 4150 carb, on a bracket race 11.5:1 408 CI SBC, at 2980 lbs. On an under 1000' ft DA night, it runs 6.13-6.15 in the eighth mile, at 109-110 mph. Will an Edelbrock 2970, port-matched with the plenum cleaned-up, and an 8082 1050 Dominator be faster? I shift at 7000 and it traps at around 7300, with a 5900 flash stall converter. Or is there something else that would be quicker and faster? A 2892?

The manifold wont make much ( if any ) difference. Believe me

I believe you Joe. If it did only help a couple of hundredths or so, $1100-$1200 is money better spent elsewhere.

We are running a car at an eight mile track.. The biggest thing I have learned is that it is very hard to lower your E T once you get it to run pretty well. We always run very hard the back half of the quarter mile, but it is much harder to improve the first eight.

Joe, care to elaborate on you and your son's combo? I know it's a SBC, and it's in an early Nova, and it runs a big speed, but that's about it.

A properly built E85 1050 would be a good way to pick up time, plenty of stations in your area. Methanol will work too.

Funny you should ask. It is a 15 to 0ne 434 with AFR heads and a Edelbrock Victor Ram with two 850 Demon carbs. It makes 890 HP at 8000 RPM , and 665 torque at 6500. He shifts at 8400, and runs 8600 thru the traps. We run some trick VP race gas mix that I do not want to discuss here.. In good air , it runs 8.70 at 153. It has been lots of fun and we have never hurt anything in the engine. He does break the ring and pinion about once a year, and he has broke the planetary gears in the Power glide three or four times. I am really surprised it and run this well on ten inch tires

What heads are you running? The Titan manifold is about the best single carb manifold out there. Don't think you can improve much from there.

JoePorting, I run the AFR 220s, pn 1110. I think the Titan is a good manifold for sure, I was just wondering if a Dominator might pick it up some? Yeah Joe, running those times on 10" tires is really good to me. Maybe I'll get there one of these days! Mark, you talking a 4150 1050? Who has the best one out there? You? I'd be willing to try one. I currently run VP113, which was a little faster than Turbo Blue 110.

A Dominator. For a large 4150 one of these...

Is that a modified 3 barrel, or something new?

BLP Little Bo, oval blade billet body that flows roughly 1220-1250 CFM dry, almost as much as a 1050 Dominator. I have not seen more than 5 HP less than a good 1050 Dominator, and this is on a 565 over 800 HP. BLP makes them of course, as well as Dale Cubic, Bob Book, myself, and well as others. Great for those classes that get a weight break for a 4150, and for those that want a larger carb on a 4150 intake.
