Sunnen MAN-845 Oil No More In 2016?

Post by DaveMcLain »

I've heard recently that the Sunnen MAN-845 honing oil will no longer be available after the first quarter of 2016.

From my understanding the MAN-845 contains chlorinated paraffins and those will no longer be allowed due to new regulations that go into effect next year.

What are you guys using as an alternative for honing?

There is several recent threads to look at.
Adger Smith started a couple on this subject. he found a substitute that seems to be working well. Most guys seemed cost conscious regarding shipping of a drum but thats normal.
Depending on your geographic location there are a few available and costs vary.

Personally i have used the NOCO grind 690 for years. every bit as good as the MAN-845 when using Sunnen abrasives

Hyd. tractor oil. $27.00 a pail. Been using it for years. Works great. Doesn't clog up the stones and doesn't stink.

Shop Tech sections has a thread on it. I'm also using the oil Adger has suggested with great results so far.

This seems to be the right thread. I think I'll give that stuff a try and see how it works. Thanks.
