Who do you use? And why?
I used nitro-plate but they quit doing aftermarket. OE only now.
I have a couple of 4cly manifolds and some heat shields to do.
thanks

Re: Exhaust Coatings
With my headers I have the company spray a silver ceramic thermal barrier on the outside and a thermal barrier on the inside that looks like piston top coating. I would have to look up the exact names for them.
Re: Exhaust Coatings
Has anyone got any good comparison on exhaust thermal coatings vs wrapping on stainless headers? How much does it actually insulate?

Re: Exhaust Coatings
I use 'Swain Tech" and their coating is called "White Lightening" because it is the best heat barrier of all the coatings out there. If you don't like white ... then paint it.

On my steel headers I used zirconium dioxide (specifically Swaintech's "White Lightining")
On a previous set of steel headers I had Jet Hot's coating (circa 1992). I was unimpressed with durability and heat reduction. Product may have changed since then.
My current headers will be stainless and not planning any coating. Based on the discussions in those threads, you can see that the thermal transfer of a stainless header cn be estimated to be about the same as zirco coated carbon steel.
For rust protection on used cast iron exhaust manifolds Bill Hirsh exhaust paint has held up reasonably well when the surface has been thouroughly scrubbed of loose rust. That can of paint is probably from 1989. Product may have changed since then.
This assumes your not looking at motorcycle application where chrome might also be considered.

Re: Exhaust Coatings
I race saharan desert rallies in the motorcycle class. So heat is always a problem and with the current bike some idiot designed the header to go between the fuel tank and the shock absorber. So when going WOT and then getting stuck in a dune the fuel boils despite exhaust wrapping and foil based heat shields on the fuel tank.Mattax wrote:

So the question is if it is a wise coise to try even more bandaid and try coating+wrap or a complete exhaust redesign is the way.

Re: Exhaust Coatings
Engine thermal efficiency is about 35%.
Simple rule is 2/3 of fuel energy goes out as heat.
Part of this goes out by radiator and bigest one by exhaust system.
Inside seadoo, engine and exhaust are both watercooled.
Best exhaust geometry convert thermal energy into cylinder succion to increase volumétrique efficience.
But to limit surrounding heat, you should ceramic exhaust. Better than clothing since you are de créatine maintenance.
