Flat Head Main Cap Fasteners
Getting ready to assemble a 1940 ford 221 CI Flat Head, one of the main cap studs threads is damaged beyond use. What would be a suitable replacement for the stud? Could one use a grade?? bolt of the proper length and torqued accordingly and feel OK about the integrity? I would replace all the main fasteners with new. This is a stock rebuild engine.

Might go over to "The HAMB" and ask.

Speedway sells an ARP kit for $30 which would be a nice upgrade, but probably un-needed. Any good auto parts place that handles Dorman studs should be able to get you a grade 8 stud that will replace the one you need.

For those prices, make 'em all new and thus all the same. Henry definitely didn't use grade 8 hardware, probably not even grade 5.Speedbump wrote:Speedway sells an ARP kit for $30 which would be a nice upgrade, but probably un-needed. Go to the Fordbarn forum. Someone there will know. Or, call Joblot in NY Ask for James. He'll have what you need
Re: Flat Head Main Cap Fasteners
Bolt kit on the way from Speedway Motors. Overkill for sure but studs alone from Dorman thru our warehouse were a tick under 20 bucks then add proper nuts and washers makes it pretty obvious to just pop for the ARP stuff. Thanks for the help.

No he didn't because if you ever work on any of those old Fords you'll find that the fasteners exceed grade 8 by a wide margin.PackardV8 wrote:For those prices, make 'em all new and thus all the same.
