cam info

Post by freddiejip »

Looking for some insight on cams and what it all means. I know enough to get myself in trouble but need a lot more schooling. I'm running a 379 sbc and wondering what to do. Afr 220 heads, 13.5 compression, super victor 2 intake and a Barry grant 825 carb. It's in a pull truck and I would like to be able to run 8,000 plus and have the power to keep the rpms up at the end and not get sucked down. Any knowledge you guys are willing to share would be great. Thank you

I'm afraid I don't know much about the ' GO ' gear your talking about, BUT. ... sounds like you need good torque and HP @ 7 - 8000 rpm

Here's a guess, say about 546 hp @ 6900 - 7100 TQ band should be reasonable, beyond those revs ?
Maybe careful gear selection and tampering with the tq curve ex / in pipe lengths, cam position etc would help

IN 290* 36-74 70-32 EX 282* @ 0.006" lift .610"

you might be able to use a more aggressive lift rate on the EX lobe as the valve is much smaller

Hopefully someone else will pitch in, I'm possibly of track here ?

Solid roller cam. My big issue right now is at the big end of the track where it really bites in and I don't have enough to grunt out that few extra feet. Any info on duration, lobe separation, ramp speed. What it all does and what each part of it benefits or how it can hurt. Looking to learn

No test results as my pulling season is over. I originally started this topic trying to learn what each aspect of the cam spec did for performance like too much lift, not enough lift, duration, lobe separation not enough or too much

Best to work with mike on a pull truck and most everything else unless you have lots of experience and/ or customers experiences where you can call your own shots
