Hello,
have to build a custom thermal insulation gasket for an intake manifold.
I've seen some made of bakelite/phenolic resins, but I read it can only stand up to 120°C/250°F.
I've also seen some in ptfe/teflon, but I'm a bit worried about cold flow/loosing bolts as it's too much elastic.
Is there any other adviced material with 150°C/300°F resistance, fuel/water proof, and rigid?
Thanks

Re: Thermal insulation gasket material
I would suggest bakelite. It would take much more than 120 c before brakedown? I seem to remember bakelite handles surviving fires, but i might be wrong.

Re: Thermal insulation gasket material
I made mine out of Viton sheet a few mm thick. Im not sure how good the thermal characteristics are but they're better than most things.
Hysteric
Edit. Viton can withstand 200 degrees celcius for 10 000 hrs +

Re: Thermal insulation gasket material
I think Victor-Reinz sells their Nitroseal gasket material in sheets large enough to make your own intake gaskets. Nitroseal is graphite material that is clinched mechanically to a steel core (no glue used). Nitroseal gaskets will withstand extremely high temperatures and seals well too.

Re: Thermal insulation gasket material
Thanks for the advices.
It seems that bakelite is the winner, as I checked it'll easily withstand to 160°C, while giving the best insulation.
