decked block but china wall not cut

Post by Mpcoluv »

Guys,
I have a assembled block that was decked quite a bit but I suspect that the china wall was not cut.
The intake sits on the china wall before it touches the head flange without a gasket.
How much should I cut the intake ends if I have a .100 gap at the head flange?
Is it a 1:1 dimension?

Until you use an intake gasket for the application laid in between the intake and heads, you won't be able to see if you need anything taken off the intake or block. You might be just fine once you mock it up with the intake gasket in place. Phil D.

Lets say I mock it up with 2 .065 thick gaskets, how much gap should I expect at the china wall?
I think the decks were each cut .050.
Does this mean I need to cut the intake ends .090 or so?

It would depend on the angle of the intake flange to the head deck surface. I would see what I needed for gasket thickness to get the ports to line up and then cut accordingly. If I cut a SBC 0.025 or less then I usually don't cut the china wall on a race application since everybody uses silicone. This way there is a smaller area the silicone has to seal up.

I don't have the option of not cutting. The intake hits the china wall before compressing the gaskets.
I am going to cut the intake .090 on the ends and see how it does.

I agree. Cutting .090" sounds good, silicon will take up that amount pretty easily even if it all turns to poo and you have a .090" gap at the china wall.
