Exhaust Flow tubes

How is a flow tube constructed for flowing an exhaust port on a cylinder head? I hear about these all the time, but am unsure as to what I really need to construct one. What kind of length should it be etc, and I am assuming that it should be the same diameter of the header primary?

I don't really think it's that critical Al, as long as you use one.
A short piece of pipe, the same diameter as the engine will run - straight, or with a bend.
Make it fit the port in the same way the header does
i.e. matched to the port, or with an intentional mismatch, etc.
