Well there you go! At least I can go home now I've learnt something new. Did he have any info on what's happening with the bearing company/machinery?

I didn't ask about that, but I did hear it from Brett at Crankshaft Rebuilders that they will be gone in a matter of weeks.
"Hi Steve,
The ACL RACE series bearings are designed to have slightly more oil clearance than regular bearings. The 0.003" you have is close to the recommended 0.001" per inch of journal diameter + 0.0005" (2.5" journal equals a nominal 0.003") "
They do have .001" undersizes in the RACE Series but no need to bother for this engine.

New Clevites are seamless. I'm much more confident with these.
Bearing in place with a smear of 620.

Back in and up and running again.
I didn't soak the lifters and just installed them straight out of the box.
About 1/2 a minute of cranking (no ignition) to produce oil pressure had them nice and quiet.
Just one small hiccup with the filter adaptor gasket I bought that suits US L67s that is just slightly different to Holden-installed L67s.
I crapped myself and the small pool of oil it created.
US GM left. GM Holden right.
Engine is strong, no noises, is smooth and am hoping is good for another trip to the Moon..
Thanks everyone.
