I like that crazy glue idea. I may try that.
I will let you guys know. Have new valve springs on the way.

It'll take some deductive reasoning to read it, but it works. Again, let me stress that surface prep is critical.

There's a material called Stresscoat that's intended for exactly this purpose. I used it back in the sixties in chainsaw development work and it was very illuminating. Most vile-smelling stuff ever though..

I think stress coat may crack like crazy on a spring compressed gently to full lift, with no surge at all.

Re: Retarded timing acting like a rev limiter
I was having a similar problem, my engine would pull to 5900 and then just quit pulling, it should have pulled to 7000 plus no problem, but it was like I had the brakes on after 5900, the other day I started experiencing problems starting the engine, I checked the grounds and wiring, tested the battery, it showed weak so I changed it, still wouldn't start when warmed up... finally after many frustrating tests and having the vehicle not start when it was warmed up I put the ignition box jumper(bypass) into the harness, all the sudden the engine starts easily, and it pulls hard to above 7000. My ignition box has a part going bad and it has been limiting the engine performance for the last year or so.

Who would have thought... bad ignition box...
