SBC 383 build Advice shooting for 550hp to 600hp
Hi All,posting.php?mode=post&f=1#
Its finally time for me to build my motor and have been reading a lot and would like to know your thoughts on my selection so far.
Car is a 1984 monte carlo ss that will see mostly street and just alittle on the track. My goal is 550hp to 600hp amd a little bit over 500TQ to FLYWHEEL. 4 Speed 700r4 w/ 4.11 gear & Power Brakes
So far
AFR 210cc competiton Heads with 650 lift hyd roller springs
Howards part# 113155-10S (Hyd Roller 600/600 lift 247/255 @ 050 on 110 LSA)
Motown single plan intake Manifold Part# 061040
SRP Forged Pistons part# 271055
Scat Forged 5.7 I beam Rods
Eagle Crank not forged
11.1.1 Compression
Scorpion Performance SRPST2112SBR - Scorpion Short Travel Retrofit Hydraulic Roller Lifters
1.5 Scorpion Platinum Series Rocker Arms
Scorpion pushrods
Howards Cams Rev Kits Part #90131
3500 Stall converter
Carb wise probably a AED 750ho-hp series Carb
1 3/4 - 1 7/8 in. Primary, 3.50 in. Collector Schoenfeld Headers Part# 186v
will be upgrading to 3in exh with x pypes dumpes...
Any advise or something you would do differently? My local engine builder here in Gary,IN is Cory's performance, He have been so helpful so far just looking for a few more advice to get what i'm shooting for

Re: SBC 383 build Advice shooting for 550hp to 600hp
I have built 50 or 60 383 engines very similar to your parts list. I see 540 to 550 regularly, once in a while 570 Hp with some little added mods. I have never used the cam you have selected though. It might be harder than you think to reach your gold. You should be sure to run the engine on an engine dyno to get all the horsepower you are looking for.

What do u mean by that???zums wrote:you need to cram more lift on that stick
Re: SBC 383 build Advice shooting for 550hp to 600hp
your aiming for 550- 600, why would you only use .6 lift
Re: SBC 383 build Advice shooting for 550hp to 600hp
If it's not too late, I'd exchange the rockers for 1.6 ratios.

Do you have duration @ .200" lift figures for that cam?

Re: SBC 383 build Advice shooting for 550hp to 600hp
U don't think that would be to big on the lift my springs on my cylinder heads are at 650 lift so using 1.6 rockers would make that 600/600 hyd roller cam to what? 635/635 or something like that? This wouldn't collapse my springs on my heads would it? Also I'm using a 1974 4 bolt main stock block...JWRE wrote:If it's not too late, I'd exchange the rockers for 1.6 ratios.
Also would I use 1.6 rockers on intake and exhaust or just on the exhaust????

Re: SBC 383 build Advice shooting for 550hp to 600hp
What Should I put 1.6 rockers on instead of the 1.5 rockers to make it a bigger lift is that what your saying???? which mean the 600/600 lift would turn into a 635/635 somewhere in that area I believe if i'm not mistaking...zums wrote:your aiming for 550- 600, why would you only use .6 lift

Yep about 2 HP more... I would re-think the crank before you go further.Desmosis10 wrote:What Should I put 1.6 rockers on instead of the 1.5 rockers to make it a bigger lift is that what your saying???? which mean the 600/600 lift would turn into a 635/635 somewhere in that area I believe if i'm not mistaking...zums wrote:your aiming for 550- 600, why would you only use .6 lift

That number gives you some idea of how much power the cam will make in upper rpm's.
