towing heads and cam question

What's your thoughts on these
http://shop.whiteperformance.com/SBC-CH ... -S-272.htm

Or the assault heads from kmj

I've got a 400 sbc in a square body 3/4 ton crew cab gonna tow a horse trailer with it its bored 20 over with 200cc dished pistons

Question on cam is my understanding a single pattern builds more torque but hurts gas mileage but what's the trade off how much mileage is lost and how much torque is gained I want all my power done at 5000-5500 rpm

I do not know those heads but I do know that the weight savings of aluminum should not be a concern with your rig
200cc??
the head port volume or the piston dish?
what's your deck height
quench?
whose pistons? number?
do the pistons match the proposed head?
I run a Mike Jones cam in my ported head chevy small block, many years of service life
I had a stable with 130 horses so I know where you are coming from
doing it again with today's oils I'd think of a hyd roller- ask Mike
have your flow data available
also ask him about rocker arm ratios
what's your exhaust? mine's rams horns with 2 1/2 pipes

For towing with good MPG on a SBC, I'd look at the GMPP small port vortec bowtie heads.

I'd want to re-do the valve job and you'll need a dish piston with 400 ci for sure.

Yes, OT, since he didn't ask, but building a 3/4t crew cab truck engine to tow horse trailers; would a 400" SBC be our first choice today? Certainly wouldn't be mine. Love them for a budget performance build in a light car; not so much in a tow truck.

Just asking, given the variety of engines which would bolt in where a 400" came originally, what would others choose for similar $$$?

FWIW, one of the better 2500 swaps I ever saw was a 500" Cad and TH400. Dirt cheap, big low and midrange torque. Your results may vary.

There's more to running aluminum heads, then the weight savings.
The aluminum heads will allow you to run more compression(about a half a point), without running into detonation issues.
I'd look at the Edelbrock Performer RPM E-Tec 170 heads.

as for cam design, I'd need to know what RPM the engine is at when you're cruising down the road, pulling the loaded trailer.

500 caddy- good choice but if he needed real grunt for lot's of miles he'd get a diesel
vortec heads also- better than standard 64 cc heads-- where those in the picture fast burns or what?
google up those kmj heads- procomps?
not very stellar reviews- whose heads are the first pair?

I don't know... a 9:1, E-Tec headed, MPFI 400 with a hydro-roller that's 208/212 ish on a 108 could be worth looking into. I'm sure Mike would spread the lobes :D

Cruise along at 2,500 rpm, locked up in "D". Maybe?

I'm guessing 2000-3000 cruising

If you went with the edelbrock heads, and 9.5:1 compression, and 1.5 rockers.
I'd recommend my Hydraulic Roller. Part# HR65327-67312-111
206/208 @.050"
.490"/.468" Valve Lift
111 LSA

Whats the price on the roller cam and lifter combo
And what would it be on flat tappet cam and lifters

Hydraulic roller cam and lifters, about $850
hydraulic Flat tappet cam and lifters, about $300

For a Hydraulic flat tappet, I'd recommend my part# H65295-67300-111, and put a 1.6 rocker on the intakes
204/210 @.050"
,472"/.450" Valve Lift with 1.6/1.5 rockers
111 LSA

That is a very mild gentle cam, why would it even need rollers ?
