which tunnel ram and carbs should i buy

I have a 74 vega,2300lbs with me in it. dart iron eagle block 421 ci, raised cam, big block cam. 15-1 compression. brodix trac 1 heads. reworked by slocko racing. intake flow 320 at 7000 rpm and exhaust flow 243. solid roller,640 lift, 280 duration. 110 lob sepration. 1.6 rockers, jesel .staul headers 1 7/8 step to 2 " into a try Y merge collector to a 3.5" cone.they are heat wrapped. intake is a wilson super victor, port matched. 950 quick fuel carb . i have a bird catcher on the carb. my 4 vain vacuum pump i run 12 oz at 7000 rpms.. i run 51 wt full syn oil. I run 112 fuel with super blue 007 additive. 2 speed glide ,1.76 1st gear with a transbrake. 4500 converter. 488 full spool. tires are 15 by 14 by 31 dia. i launch at 4500 ,shift at 7500 ,cross traps at 8200. 8.78 et at 154 mph. 60' is 1.238. I am told that the right tunnel ram will give me more. Hogan told me theirs will give me 60 more HP, $3000.00 . is that the way to go ? 1 carb ? 2 carbs , what size ? I am trying to go about 8.60,et . I did try 456 gears, and I went slower.
I have my timing set at 37 degrees, hope i gave enough information, thanks Terry

Unless you are willing to change you converter, you will not get anywhere near the best performance from any tunnel ram change. We run a 434 SB Chevy setup with a tunnel ram, and we use a 7000-7200 stall converter, and shift at 82-8400 RPM.. I also use a much bigger cam ( 290-308--875 lift ) You could try the cam you have, but it will run much better with a much higher stall converter= I use and also recomend the EDelbrock Victor Ram for the best tunnelram-- It is just as good as any sheet metal tunnelram I have ever tested.

You definitely need more cam, and more converter. Joe's piece is pretty maxed out in those 2 areas but the tunnel ram and 2 carbs will pick you up 50+ hp. You can find used sheet metal intakes on the internet and I have seen 20-30hp over a cast TR with the same carbs. I would suggest going a slightly taller tire, 8-10 degrees more duration and at least .750-.765" lift. Call a reputable cam guy with your flow #'s and basic combination and they will steer you in the right direction. If you get a chance at the races,try touching a warmed up and running intake,one cast and one sheet metal just for grins and then think about it. Hogan is one of the premier intake manifold builders FYI. Phil D.

sloko who did my head work, said, i could not go with a higher cam lift, because, i would have to use bigger valve springs and then with that, special head bolts, because the springs would hit them. and he wanted a extra bunch of money for that. and I was told, the extra valve lift was a waste, because my heads could not flow enough to warrent that high valve lift. been looking for sheet metal intakes for 23 degre heads and did not find any. so if anyone one knows about 1 used 1 for sale please let me know, thanks

looked at my cam card again. 660 lift at 292 duration, do not know if that makes a bigh difference. thats at .o50 lobe sepration 110

If your cam card calculates your valve lift using a 1.50 rocker ratio,like most do ,then you are actually at .704" theoretical. And since you don't plan on more cyl. head mods, the edelbrock is definitely more budget friendly and readily available. Two good carbs and some minimal intake port work, more convertor and 8.60's should easily be in reach. The 23degree sheet metal intakes are hard to find but they are occasionally available used and well priced. Good luck, Phil D.

The engine MUST flash stall at RPM above the PK torque , (mainly with a glide) to jump off the line quicker.

IMO, your car have enough cam and is screaming for more converter. I'd go with the Victor Ram for $$$ reasons and two holleys ultra 850 or two 1050 dominators.

Hell, the professor Bill Jenkins had on his PS Vega nothing less than two 1050s above his 331" SBC at 9k RPM!

With a 6500- 7000 converter I'd be more inclined to the dominators and let we know how they did ok

so if i launch at 4500, it will jump to 7000 !, man, right now with the 4500 converter i hit the wheekie bars hard and ride them 60' . what will happen with a 7000 converter. i have my front locked tight now

That's what a 2300 lbs car with a 421" is supposed to do! LOL


I think you have to adjust the wheelie bars lower and/or change the IC if you wanna go faster.

Then you do not have a 4500 converter.

If it is advertised at lets say 4000 and it leaves off the brake at 6000 it is not what is advertised. Buying a converter is fun...

But now you have a target so you can send it in and have it go up or down in stall to what you need.


But .... I think you are close as long as the speed is close to the RPM.
