Most HP w/small cam?

Postby paul s. » Fri Aug 17, 2012 7:29 pm

What is the most N/A horsepower you have made with (what you would call) a small cam? And what was the application? Doesn't matter if it is flat tappet hydraulic or solid roller. If I recall, Joe Sherman made over 600hp from a 360ci sbc with a 230@.050 HR Isky and some ported AFR's in the 1st Engine Masters.

I can do that one better yet== Comp Cams made me a special grind ( still 230 at 050 ) after I won with the Isky cam, and it made 630 HP at 6500 in that same engine, I was soo impressed, I started using Comp Cams in everything I build now- This was back in jan of 2003. I am still impressed.

I have got to know how did you do that Joe numbers like that could almost sway me away from a a solid. lol.
Know you cant tell all but you had pre prod. 195s? Can you say what kind of intake/comp/carb by chance? Thats a lot of power for what it is nice.

Running plenty more head/cam and doubt Im making anywhere near that.

The Comp Cams grind I used was a TK solid roller profile with Speed Pro stock hyd roller lifters. The heads were the AFR raised runner sprint car type heads that I ported myself to keep the runners as small as possible. just for kicks, I put that engine in my kids 65 Nova, and it run 10.40 at 128 with totally the wrong rear end gears and converter. It probably could have gone much faster- I ran a 1025 CFM carb that was really big for that small engine too. Headman made me some headers with lazer cut port matched flanges that fit the heads perfectly, and stamped the stock part numbers on them . I did what I had to do to win.

Random thoughts:

1. Today's good heads and intakes don't need the duration common in the bad old days of OEM double hump iron heads.

2. Today's small high intensity cams are way bigger in total area under the curve than the longer duration common in the bad old days.

3. Today's springs, light valves, light retainers follow the high intensity lobes better than the heavy stuff did in the day.

Bottom line - small today is way different than small back then.

Very interesting Jack.. I still think thr duration is very important, especially if you need to turn some high RPM.

Hi, Joe,
Very interesting Jack.. I still think thr duration is very important, especially if you need to turn some high RPM.

Agree, Joe, but that's a different discussion. He was asking about "Most HP w/small cam". To do that, we have to define small. And small depends upon displacement. You've pretty much done that and I'd agree, 230@.050" in a 350" with an EMC 6,500 RPM limit is the end of small. Above that lies more serious work for real race engines and unlimited RPM.

However, 350" is ant shit in some circles. If you ain't got more than 500", you can't bench race in some garages. At that displacement level, 230@.050" is way, way too small.

And we haven't even discussed lift. Back in the day, .300" lobe lift was getting serious. Today, .500" lobe lift on some engine families won't get you bragging rights.

Bottom line - the OPs question is one asked just for making conversation after the first beer.

That's no problem, goto Sonny's racing engines website and look all you want. We just did on for an Australian and Sonny brought back one of their hotrod magazines from their country , it was right on the cover, it was titled because I can... Lol
