latest results on overheating engine

Postby mike22l » Mon Jul 30, 2012 10:41 pm

I checked the car tonight. Heres what i found:
Water level is good. no lose.
I pulled no 7, 8 plug and they looked too clean and looked higly lean or the cylinders were not getting cooled by water and they got hot.
I pulled no 1, 2 plug and they looked perfect!

3 and 4 looked ok but slightly cleaner than 1 and 2 and 5 and 6 looked a little lean.

Seems we are getting hotter the more we go to the back. I suspect a bad waterpump would do this?
If the thing was low on fuel and running lean I would see it over all the plugs right? The plugs would read the same.

Maybe my fuel pump is going south and the front plugs look good because my 4412 carb is on a spacer that is pushed towards the front and feeding what fuels left to the front banks?

This is in addition to my warped vortec intake thread.....I machined everything and resealed it and i am not spitting water anymore. The rad level is perfect. My plugs are still getting too clean as i go towards the back of the engine.
I therefore suspect water pump is not pushing water in the back?

Your thoughts and thanks guys?

You need to get the hot water in the rear of the motor to the front ASAP. The best way to do this is to plumb some water lines from the rear of the manifold to the front of the manifold just below the thermostat. You can either get a thermostat spacer with npt holes in them and plumb them there or just drill and tap two npt holes right by the thermostat.

Leaking head gasket ?

That would explain "too clean" on the plugs.

I just machined the heads flat and checked for cracks and checked the deck and put new gaskets on it thurs and before we ran it saturday.....and we are not using any water....

A leaking head gasket? On both sides? After a fresh cut and new gaskets? doubtful...

Since I can't remember refresh my memory on the engine. For some reason I was thinking Ford. Give as much info as you can. When does it overheat, does it have a shroud, type of fan, water pump brand, compression, what head gaskets, fuel brand, how much timing, timing mark verified.

358 dirt circle track 358 chev
906 vortec heads
110 fuel
full shround with tunnelling
an old high flow summit water pump...yeah i know. yuck..its 5 years old...putting a new stewart stage 3 on tomorrow
11.6 :1
rpm 7116 intake
4412 carb
carter mechanical fuel pump

Never had an overheat problem before..something went south

We had an overheat problem 2 weeks ago because he got plugged with mud in the rad. Ran it the next week and it spit water everywhere and ran hot. Then we cut the heads and checked for cracks and cut the intake with new grade 8 bolts and torqued in 5 lb increments and verified intake fit. Deck is flat...Not spitting or losing water anywhere!

Theres lots of good ideas on how to keep it cool and run cooler...but...I had that...now i dont...hmmm...thoughts?

Putting on a new fuel pump and water pump tomorrow along with verifying carb spacer flatness with new gaskets.

You guys are great and I appreciate everyinput.

Get an adjustable carb spacer (canton or hvh) and slide the carb back and retry and jet accordingly.I have run into this with this combo before and thats what fixed ours.
