292 comp cam
What would be a good lifter and push rod to run with this cam its going in a sbc 4 bolt main steel crank 30 over with flat top pistons and a set of bowtie heads.
Re: 292 comp cam
is this a hydraulic or mechanical cam ? If it is hyd I use OEM lifters with flat spots on the sides on most builds, they are overall a little longer on the pushrod seat to bottom measurement, if mechanical I use a lifter with a bleed hole / edm hole on the face of the lifter and for pushrods any .080 wall should be ok. Just make sure you are sure on your pushrod length they are not all measured from tip to tip although they are close.Lombardi wrote:What would be a good lifter and push rod to run with this cam its going in a sbc 4 bolt main steel crank 30 over with flat top pistons and a set of bowtie heads.
Re: 292 comp cam
Any hydraulic lifter for a SBC would work. Comp only warranties their cams if you use their lifters. Pushrod length needs to be determined during assembly for proper geometery.

Re: 292 comp cam
No , you need a cam ground for a roller lifter, your cam has a tapered lobe to promote lifter rotation also your lifters have a small crown on the face, rollers are flat across the lobe .Lombardi wrote:It's hydraulic, would a roller lifter be a choice?

Lifters: Made in USA, DELPHI or Johnson.Lombardi wrote:What would be a good lifter and push rod to run with this cam its going in a sbc 4 bolt main steel crank 30 over with flat top pistons and a set of bowtie heads.
Pushrods: stock - OK, Elgin 1010 - better, Trend (comp) very good.

Re: 292 comp cam
Lifters from GM are the best plus I would get the cam ground on a P-55 core.

Re: 292 comp cam
hard to believe that cam is still around , but it always seems to do pretty good for the situation that its made for
Re: 292 comp cam
I remember reading about that cam in the 80s mags it was the big deal
11:1 350 camel humps a Vic Jr, 750 and a 292 magnum
Barely scratched 400chp.
Things have certainly come a long way since then.

Yea, it was only 10 years behind the times, back then.cuisinartvette wrote:I remember reading about that cam in the 80s mags it was the big deal

Re: 292 comp cam
i remember a build up of a 305 using it with a vic jr , 650 dp , can't remember what heads , and it making 400 hp ,, the cars i've known that had it in them ,, seemed to run better than the sum of their parts ,,, and I saw the cam removed from both engines , so i know for certain thats what it was , same shop did a motor for me at the time and he had it for sale , cuz they stepped up to a solid roller , this was around 1992 ,,, i think the first time I saw it in an add was around 1979 ,, i was looking for a rv type cam for my high school ride, and was looking at the 268 h cam , and noticed the magnum line of cams ,, the asymetrical lobe design was the selling point if my memory is right , quick opening intake , slow closing exhaust
Re: 292 comp cam
That sounds about right. That's what we were making with our 280 hydraulic cams at that time. We did a back to back test in the 80's between our 280 hydraulic, and the Magnum 280H, and the comp cam was down 30lbs, and 25hp.levisnteeshirt wrote:i remember a build up of a 305 using it with a vic jr , 650 dp , can't remember what heads , and it making 400 hp ,,
Of course it was about half the price of ours at that time, so I guess you get what you pay for.

Re: 292 comp cam
I think it was Car Craft that put a set of "high performance" heads, a double pumper, and aluminum intake, and a 292 cam in/on a 305HO in a mid eighties Camaro, in some sort of "shoot out" between it and the Mustang of the same era. Yeah, it made 400HP. It also went off lie a grenade, and it was not really that fast. A ton of people bought those cams. About 99.5% of them were sick not long after.levisnteeshirt wrote:i remember a build up of a 305 using it with a vic jr , 650 dp , can't remember what heads , and it making 400 hp ,, the cars i've known that had it in them ,, seemed to run better than the sum of their parts ,,, and I saw the cam removed from both engines , so i know for certain thats what it was , same shop did a motor for me at the time and he had it for sale , cuz they stepped up to a solid roller , this was around 1992 ,,, i think the first time I saw it in an add was around 1979 ,, i was looking for a rv type cam for my high school ride, and was looking at the 268 h cam , and noticed the magnum line of cams ,, the asymetrical lobe design was the selling point if my memory is right , quick opening intake , slow closing exhaust

Re: 292 comp cam
saw that 292 cam in a 406 , ported 186 heads , flat top KB's , 5.7 rods , weiand 8004 intake , edelbrock 750 , 3500 tci 10" converter , 373 gear , 27 " tall Hoosier street tire , go 7.40's at 2650 local 1/8 mile , 86 monte carlo SS un cut , shifted at 6200 , i sold him the block so i followed how it was doing , they pulled the cam out with the lifters on the same lobe , and put it in a 355,, flat piston , 461's , weiand stealth , , 750 dp , PG , not sure of converter , 456 gear , 72 nova , 26 x 8.5 slick , 7.50's at 2650 local ,,, thats pretty good for a pump gas motor in the early 90's
