This summer a gay brought a 355 in that another shop built but did not plate hone ETC. So we used an SHP block went to 4.155 bore, This engine was going in a 70 Chevelle show car and the heads were a ported set of Elerbrook's that were done up nicely. Customer went with a 301/309 lunati solid roller cam on a 106 lobe sep cause it was all about the sound. We did step up to the .904 lifters as well

Never got the engine on the dyno but on the street with a 4000 stall it will lift the front wheel of the ground with to guys in the front seat.

That being said with the short stroke and big bore you put a bigger runner head on as you are moving alot of air because of the piston speed.

For only a 377 it surely gets the job done!!!!!!

if your gonna spend money somewhere spend it on a block, if the 400 isnt cracked now it will be, i used the sportsman bowtie block, pretty nice piece from gm, caps are splayed nodular iron, with a factory gm steel 3.48 crank, i easily shift at 7700, on pump gas and drag radials, it will pull the wheels off the ground and cut an et of 11.1 in a 3500 lb car, throttle response isnt anything to sneeze at either

I have never run it with sportsman 2 heads however. I ran a best of 9.49 @ 140 mph in a 3150# car. It still had more in it with a bigger intake and heads. I turned mine 8800-9000 RPM every pass and was very reliable.
With a shot of NOS?
If not , were the heads 23 degree , cam and comp?

big bore+short stroke=high rpm =hp.(if you have the appropriate cylinder heads, cam etc.).typical NASCAR engine has 4.125 bore x 3.25 stroke, even though they have a 358ci limit, look at the numbers they produce.if you have a ci. rule,i wouldnt hesitate in building one.

You sure? That's a very unusual limit number.

No I don't use nitrous. That was naturally aspirated. The heads that were on that engine were a small set of 18* heads. They were CFE BMF 248cc heads, a GM 4150 18* intake, a custom comp cam 281/290 @.050" .800"/.765" lift 108 lsa, and 14:1 compression.

No problem. Thanks for the compliment. Yes that big bore short stroke combo works very well. It is a very efficient combo. And it'll turn lots of RPM, which I love to do.

Can you give us a rundown of the rules, like cam type, exact cid, head material, etc...?

yanno ,,, i've never heard any 377 owner say , " man i hated how that thing ran " ,, they usually do a pretty good job ,,,, i know plenty of dissatisfied 383, 406 owners ,,, i've busted my share of 383's 406's with a 355 ,, now in better hands ,, i know a properly set up bigger motor will do better ,,,, but , its all in the combo i guess ,,, i think ifi was gonna do a 377 ,, i'd go with a high quality flat tappet and rev the snot out of it ,, it would live forever ,,

There is no real set number on limitations. you get classes on what is done to your motor. the motor would put me in the class i want and thats why i said its a 377 limit. theres no limit but thats as much as i can go to be in that class

OK good. Now what's your budget? How much power do you think you need to win consistently??

I really like the 377 (3.5" stroke 4.125" bore) for true performance applications, but I wouldn't build one on a production block anymore. I don't like the 383 at all, if you need torque, build a 400. For a 377 to really work well, you need a relatively light vehicle with good over all gearing.

a 3.625 stroke motor seems to do good too ,,, they all do good with the right stuff ,,,, pick your favorite and go with it ,,, different gear required ,,
