Do appreciate the info will check out these heads and look into putting together a good reliable bottomend. Thanks Mike Ross
Re: AFR heads on 406 sbc, how much hp
What is the best bore stroke combination for a 440 inch small block? Want longevity
Re: AFR heads on 406 sbc, how much hp
4.185 bore, 4" stroke. You would need a Dart little M or comparable. Also a professional to assemble the short/ longblock.
The 4" stroke will require some attention to detail by a pro. But with the right parts, would work very well.

This probably will be my last go round so will be looking for an aluminum block, would really like to build a 454".Putting together plans for two different setups, one with SB2 topend easily getting into the 750/800hp range, the other with conventional setup getting into the 650 hp range.Considerations fitment into bike and exhaust. Both will work SB2 will require lifting gas tank and custom built headers, the other way is a bolt in.

Are you now talking Big Block?mdross1 wrote:,would really like to build a 454".
If thats the case, build a 565. 800 horse would be a piece of cake. Extremely reliable, and mild enough to drive every day.
You really need to decide which direction you want to take this project before anyone can be of real help to you.

Re: AFR heads on 406 sbc, how much hp
Understand the confusion,As I said this motor is in the first stages of finding out what can be built and small blocks are new to me.Been building big blocks for a lot of years. So there is a learning curve.I now know I can bolt together most any size small block with SB2 topend and get into 800hp,a 15 or 18 degree topend and get into 700 hp,a good set of say AFR 220's and get into 600hp.The SB2,15 and 18 degree require special exhaust headers, also the SB2 topend would require a gas tank raise of who knows how much, a lot to consider. Before I start ordering parts have to decide which will be the best way for me to go.Because of the issues related to the SB2,15 and 18 degree motors need to look into big inch small blocks, and see just how much can be wrung from one of those.
So far have talked to SB2 people, AFR techs, JE pistons,Comp Cams, trying to get up to speed on what combinations work and work reliably. Thanks for bearing with me.For now looking into a big inch small block and know you can get them out to 488"

There are guys making 700+ hp with regular 23 deg heads....it is possible
Re: AFR heads on 406 sbc, how much hp
Sure would like to talk to these guys it would make life a lot easier. How do I get in touch with them?

Hey Joel,Is there any chance you would pass on some of your experience, and what parts you chose to get into the 700hp area? What are you running for cubic inches? This motor I want to build will have an aluminum block, want to save as much weight as I can,it's going in a motorcycle.Mike RossJoel Dubose wrote:Your talking to one...lol

Re: AFR heads on 406 sbc, how much hp
The company that I worked for built some 23* 9/1 engines. These were for a busch north engines. We bought a head that flow 360 cfm. It was a 356 ci engine , big bore short stroke. While testing the engine on the dyno , we put a cup style carb on it. About a 1000 cfm carb. And made a few pulls. It made 680 HP. That was at 9/1 cr. So add some compression and your there. We also did a dirt track late model that we used some heads that I ported. Its been a while but I think that I had the heads flowing around 375 cfm. It made 700 HP. It was also a 358 ci engine. The really large ci engines tend to make power early so they become head limited to early in the rpm to make the most power. If you built a large ci engine you would need to increase cam size and watch your airflow to make sure that power doesn't occurs to early. Take for example 550 fp @ 4200 rpms vrs 500 fp @ 6500 rpms do the math and you'll see where I'm coming from.

Joel, whose heads did you use on those pulls. There are a lot of choices, some I have read flow near 400cfm.My plan to this point is an aluminum block approx 427ci, would really like to use a head that has the standard exhaust bolt pattern,Super Victor intake.Once the block and heads I decide on are here will call Comp Cams, then see about getting a dbl pmper.Mike RossJoel Dubose wrote:The company that I worked for built some 23* 9/1 engines.
