SBC mild street cam

A customer is requesting me to build a mild, 350 SBC for street cruising and car shows. It goes in a custom 1967 C-10 Chevy pick up with all street equipment so we must be careful with the choice.

His only request, "I want it to have some cam sound and some pep" My plan is basically a stock 350 rebuild, dish pistons, GM Iron Vortec heads, and Performer intake.

It has been many years since I chose a street cam for sound, all the engines I build are all out bracket race designs.

Let me hear your suggestion about a cam to fill this need.

Thank You

Believe it or not, the Comp Cams thumper grinds run very well, and sound real good too.I have used them many times, and the performance is much better than expected, and they have the DRIVE IN IDLE sound that people want

Thanks Joe, that is exactly what he wants, "Drive In Idle"

I appreciate the tip.

I've installed a few flat tappet Thumpr cams in customers SBC's,they do work and sound well with 8.5-9:1 static compression.

In my own street 11:1 compression SBC I love my roller XR276HR10, it has a lopey sound but the power is more impressive.

Youtube is great for "hearing" a certain cam or exhaust before commiting to an install. just do a search for "chevy 350 thumpr" or "xe268" etc... and watch away

If this is a true street deal, I would think that mpg might be a factor. I would think that thumper cam would kill gas mileage. Would a Isky 264 or 270 single pattern on a 108 LSA be a better choice for a bit of sound while still maintaining good street manners, decent mpg, and lots of torque down low to move that heavy truck? I'm also thinking the thumper would need a great exhaust, converter, and some gear to "work" in a heavy street car. :?:

I've had very good results from some of those Erson hydraulic grinds, the Hi Flow lobe series, something like E110321 runs very well I also like to use the Reed Torque master lobes from Steve Demos, Demos' Cams. Both of these lobes are quiet running too which is something I can't say for the Comp XE grinds.

Let this video load and have a listen. Is this the sound you are after?

Its a very easy basic build recipe 350SBC with vortec heads and a Isky .450" lift circle track cam.

Not only does it sound great, it goes like hell too.

Heck, it's a way "Old-School" cam, but please consider a Crane 274 H06 hy-cam.

It's the 106 LCA that give's it the "cam-cackle".

Note!! Nothing fancy here at all....

There is nothing òld school`about this cam.
The SBC has been around since what 1955.

When something is done right (a great hi perfomance cam designed for a SBC), it does not need to be reinvented every week.

This series of cams are designed for a valve lift limit of .450`lift (and go fast too)

Easy no hassle no machining fit using stock GM 062 906 Vortec heads with just a valve spring swap. (remove the inner damper)

Uhm... I think pdq was using the adjective 'old school' to describe the crane bump stick?? Not the Isky, could be wrong though. I like the Crane 274 H06 as well for a little lump and low C.R... I think Elgin had a real similar grind for much less but I can't find it at Comp. Products any longer.

Right, the old-school Crane 274 H06...

It's a great mild-motor cackle cam, imho.

Elgin Industries also sells the same cam as the Crane 274 HO6 as part E-1785-P.

Buy a cam/lifter set for $99.95 at Northern Auto Parts: http://www.northernautoparts.com/Produc ... elId=17034

$109.95 at Competition Products: http://www.competitionproducts.com/Elgi ... o/E1785PM/
