brodix 11x vs. afr235 dyno test

Post by farmer »

Just finished dyno runs thought I'd share the results. The engine is a basic Shafiroff 434 bracket race engine built in 2007 and raced for the first time in 2010.
The engine came with off the shelf 11x Brodix heads and had 185 runs we base lined the engine on the dyno just like we ran it 565 ft-torq @6000
677 hp @ 6800 the numbers from Safiroff's dyno where 684 hp @ 6800. We changed the heads to out of the box afr 235 heads on the dyno and re tested
597 ft-torq @ 6000 735 hp @ 6800. The goal of changing heads is to run 7.90's in a 1750 lb altered , the old combination ran 8.15. Do you think i'll make it ?

Thanks again for posting your results. That's exactly the type of dyno test I wanted to see for a long time.
Something I don't understand though.
Why didn't the AFR 235 heads have higher peak rpms for HP and torque?
Love to see the cam specs too. [-o<

so you repalce a head that flows mid 280s at best with one that flows 40 or so more cfm and the power went up
Were you really that surprised?
Not being negative, but this isnt exaclty a apples top apples comparison

I would have to agree with Nevdos, out the box 11x heads are not the best bolt on heads.

Now have a good port cut into the 11x heads and then Dyno test again, not saying anything bad about the AFR heads, they work great, but they should.

At 1750lbs that power should not have a problem going 7.90's.

I had 11X heads on my engine for a few years. I couldn't imagine anyone buying them and using them straight out of the box with NO porting at all, that is pretty silly.

Now, if the AFR head couldn't beat an out-of-the-box 11X then it would be better used as a door stop. The 11X heads are a very old design, no CNC maching, nodda. Now, with the purchase price of the 11X plus the labor for porting, the AFR head is certainly a better bargain price-wise. I bet that 11X head would beat the AFR head if it was ported correctly though.

PS: Not an AFR-basher but not an AFR nut-hugger either. I have a set of AFR's on the wifes car and All Pro's on mine.

Looks like Shafiroff cnc ports the bowls/chambers/turns on the Brodix 11x intake side as per the below link and gets a little over 300 cfm out of them. Offer them at a darn pretty good price of $ 1895 if you ask me.

Looks like they offer the AFR 235's at $ 2495 as per the below link..... hence $ 600 difference. 58 HP difference.... probably a pretty good deal to most.

Interesting topic. I got a set of 11X heads that have been hand ported by Ron's Porting Service. They have the number stamped on the front next to "Ron's Porting Service". I called Ron and asked for info on the heads, and told him they have numbers stapmed by his name. He said, "We stopped stamping numbers by our name like 10 years ago", WOW. Either way they were a damn good deal, checked out fine no cracks etc., are hardblok filled. So either way I will still put them on my Enderle alcohol injected, nitrous fogged, stroked 4oo+ SBC. :D

I stand corrected I made the assumption the heads where strait from brodix these did have some cnc port matching maybe 3/4" into the port. Both heads were flowed on my bench the 11x flowed 301 @ .700, the afr were 322@ .700. The reason for the change to afr is I only payed $1850 from summit on there Christmas
discount and would like to run in the 7.90's it made for a easy upgrade because both are 60/40 heads.

Brodix does offer a fully CNC ported 11X. It's the KC 11 SP X. Flow around the same as an AFR #1068 227 head, 305 CFM on a SF-600, but costs double. $3200 for the Brodix KC 11 SP X vs. $1600 for the AFR #1068's.

58 hp for changing from a non ported head to a full ported head? Thats impressive  not. I've seen on here where Big Joe make that type of power from a 355 engine with AFR 195 heads on pump gas. I've also seen full ported 11 x heads make 750 hp. The AFR heads do have a good vaule but it seems on here that you only push what you can sell. If you cant make a dollar on them then they are junk. lol
