Re: Filling exhaust cross over
I did it the same way on the 305 HO heads. THey have the same nasty twinned exhaust EGR port as the 882 head.athomp wrote:I am neither a machinist or a porter but this is how I filled the crossovers in my 882 heads:
I cut a couple or pieces of sheet metal and formed them into a concave shape to cover the crossover opening in the bowl. They fit tight and follow the contour of the bowl.
To hold those in place I turned a couple of pieces of hardwood in the lathe to fit in the bowls and hold the sheetmetal covers tight against the bowl sides. Those plugs are drilled down the center the size of a valve stem and a pair of old valves are tapped in to hold them in place.
Then I filled the crossover from the intake side with melted aluminum.
That gives a very good result in the bowls and only require minimal blending.
I made a set of 4 so that I can fill 2 heads at a time.
It works for me.
It sure didn't slow it down any by filling them in.

Re: Filling exhaust cross over
I used high temp furnace cement. I had a friend who was road racing a FI corvette that ran hot but after fill the head cross over with it and it cured the problem as it kept the exhaust heat out of the water jacket
Re: Filling exhaust cross over
Probably get by with filling the passage(s) with no more than good old, AP Green, 'Sairset airset fireclay mortar.F-BIRD'88 wrote:Some of the SBC smogger heads like the #4416 305HO heads have twin egr/exhaust riser passages on the center two exhaust ports.
So you want to fill them to stop the center exhaust ports from cross talking.
Has any one used Furnace cement? http://www.imperialgroup.ca/product.cfm ... roduct=366 Like this stuff. Will it stay in there?
What about using a furnace repair Firebrick trimmed to fit the passage as tightly as possible and cement it in there with furnace cement?
I also figure that IF YOU CAN STILL BUY IT??
Jadeset Super 88% Tabular Alumina, 10% Chromic Oxide, Phos-Acid Bonded mortar is dandy stuff. But it will be pricy!! I don't know if Harbison Walker or ANH sell it anymore or not since AP Green bit the dust??

Re: Filling exhaust cross over
I'd be worried about such materials breaking up under the severe vibrations of exhaust pulses and the resulting grit being sucked back into the cylinder...

Same debate with Turbo Buick heads, some say no gains at all. I chose to pour mine because for sure it helps with intake heat and after hours of porting I couldn't see leaving nasty edges hanging in the flow path.
