How Much Twist? Place Yer Bets...

Post by MadBill »

OK, per my thread on crank twist, I'm now "The guy with the Data"! I locked the flywheel flange and applied 250 lb-ft. to the keyway of a 3.45" standard journal Sonny Bryant SBC (equivalent, per my "...Twist, How Much..." thread, to 550 on the dyno.) How many degrees of twist did I see?

Come on you guys! Over 90 views and 9 votes, but not one prepared to go on the record! Maybe I should reveal the answer only by IM to the first 6 to raise their hands...

There is an adadage that goes something like "there was method to madness". And that is what drove my vote for .5 to 1 degree of twist.

Well w/it being a bryant shaft, i would hope it be less the 1 degree, so by bet is .5 - 1full degree max.

250 ft/lb static twist test on a shaft of that structure and diameter will reveal nearly immeasurable twist. <----WAG

Good second guess, Jesse! Guess it's close enough to 24 hours for the poll to reveal that those Bryants are stout pieces: The actual twist was a negligible 0.249 degrees (0.0075" on a 3.45" stroke) Guess we won't be needing any trick sparkers to compensate for that!
Oh well, at least now we know...
Thanks for all the comments and interest guys. :D
