"One thing that I don't understand ( I may be wrong ) is the almost universal thumbs down of the scat ,eagle, etc, internal engine parts. If they are so bad how come so many are sold???? "
When Eagle first started selling rods they used offshore bolts,
alot of racers and engine builders where bit.
After the switch to ARP hardware those failures pretty much
came to an end. In the mid to late 90's I worked for
a company that sold alot of imported engine products.
The biggest complaint I heard was sizing issues with the big ends.
sometimes the small ends where not finished.
Also the crankshaft rod journals looked like they used the
same belt to polish as was used on the mains, alot of taper
sometimes over a .001, balancing was sometimes an issue.
Some the I-beam forgings looked real ugly.
For a bracket, street or mild oval application they
seemed to hold up OK.

For street or endurance applications I would not restrict oil flow to the springs, oil is the only thing cooling them.
If memory serves me right, about 4 or 5 years ago
the cup engine builders where having alot of spring problems
Yates was blocking off the cyl head oil returns and flooding
the top in an attempt to gain some spring reliability.
I think Nascar put and end to that practice.

Valve Springs ( Fred )
The winston cup motors have valve spring oilers to deliver a additional amount of oil to the valve springs for cooling purposes. The cams are so aggressive that the springs would overheat in a short period of time without it.. On a sbc you need to open up the rear lifter valley hole to about twice its original size and the front as much as possible to encourage oil drain back. Oldwrench , I recently bought a stroker from Ohio Crank. They buy their shafts and rods from the maker unfinished and finish them theirselves. The specs were dead on and the workmanship was really good. I know they have a good repertation around here. Hope this helps.
Darin that crack at the viper guys made me laugh, they are some of the most uneducated people (in the area of their cars) as any I have ever seen. It's almost sad really.

I'm pretty new to posting here, (although I've been visiting this site to read for quite some time), and I think that most magazines TRY to get it right however, they also can make their stories sound as though it's the "be all, end all".
Unless I've actually tested it in some way or another, I have a difficult time believing ANYTHIG out there unless it comes from a very TRUSTED source. I mostly read those magazine articles to maybe get a hold on what I should try to test next because it's working for someone else and it MAY be worthwhile to try it.
On other forums I have mostly found that someone only posts a question whenever they want THEIR oppinion justified not, to actually get a real answer in return; it's different here.
THEORIES are good ... RESULTS are much better ... !

I agree no one wants to be wrongI respectfully disagree, when money changes hands from the manufactor to the magazine via advertiseing it has to change every thing about a product.
