Re: Reverse port? I don't know what to call it
I've got a guy who does vintage tractor pull stuff and I thought about trying it so that I could get four intake ports and two exhaust ports.

I always liked this look.

Agree, Bill. Maybe the ultimate old school, before turbos and electronics took over. Henry Ford, Harry Miller, Ettore Bugatti, et al, could have taken one look and nodded approvingly.

SBC here, nothing really earth shattering, but just a Pete Aardema OHC conversion.

your right, it wasnt drake, it said FOYT, and FORDWalter R. Malik wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2018 11:48 amYES ... finally someone brought this up. Although the intake was right down the middle of the head.grandsport51 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2018 1:46 pm I believe the ford Dohc Indy engine never located the exhaust ports on the outside of the engine,(see Autolite Mustang Pic 32 http://www.hotrod.com/articles/funny-ca ... ge-1966-2/# )they wanted it to be easier to rout the exhaust for optimal firing order of 180 degrees while still
retaining 90 Degree Crank throws

In the 60's, half the field in the Indy 500 had this engine. The exhaust headers came to be known as "the bundle of snakes" and the rights to this engine was later bought by A.J. Foyt to become widely known as the "Foyt" engine.

So who came up with the added intake port on the exhaust side in the SBC head?
Gus Hutchinson/HRE or someone else?

What I recall is this design was supposed to give a much broader torque curve because of shorter intake port length.

So if you put a turbo where the carb was, how does cam timing change? Just moving ignition timing would allow it to run?
Re: Reverse port? I don't know what to call it
So true!
Suddenly my mind flashes to the first race car I wrenched on, an 850 cc. Mini Minor. There was one nut on the Weber carb manifold that was totally impossible to get any kind of a wrench onto. I don't know what the designer had in mind, but I used a hammer and a chisel to re 'n re it; had to replace the nut about every third cycle...
