Material make up of the Chinese Dart look alike block

Post by CNC BLOCKS »

I first have to thank Leo at http://www.rlengines.com/ in conjunction with Turbocam which performed an Optical Emission Spectroscopy, I will add Leo has been working on a new anti-wear treatment TX-1 for performance components http://www.rlengines.com/tech/TX1.pdf Guive him a call for more info.

Some of the Key ingredients in cast iron to make it strong are Nickel,Molybdenum, Copper

The Little-M nickel content is 0.149, Molybdenum 0.211, Copper 0.404

Dart SHP Nickel content is 0.071, Molybdenum .016, copper 0.283

Chinese block Nickel content is 0.005, Molybdenum 0.005, Copper 0.020

Leo did the Brinell test by using the Rockwell B Scale and converting it to Brinell scale and he will back this test.

Little-M tested 200

SHP 190

Chinese block 107

I am sure the chinese blocks will vary from block to block and now I see why when I had to line hone the chinese block it kept loading the stones up as it was extremely soft.

 Aren't those values so small it would not even be considered an alloy, but just trace elements..?

blocks tested?

Post by governor »

So were the PBM & Pro Comp blocks the ones tested?

If so then PBM needs to remove the wording HIGH NICKEL content from there online information.

PRI show will most likely not have a block on display or they are already mixing a new batch of material ready to go in the smelter.

This probably goes in the General Discussion forum, but those blocks most likely come out of factory environments shown here: http://www.chinahush.com/2009/10/21/ama ... -in-china/ not the state of the art clean ones that do exist in China also.

After looking at those pictures I now know how the Chinese came to calling it the Yellow River. Probably where those trace elements came from in the block.

Just curious, has anyone done this same test on a typical factory 010 block?

When the content is given above, for example, "The Little-M nickel content is 0.149, Molybdenum 0.211, Copper 0.404 ............." the first question I had was whether this was a % or a fraction of a %. If you look at AISI 1006 or AISI 1020 iron, they have .06%C or .20%C Cast iron can be as high as 1.00% to 2.00% C Thus when I see the above, is the nickel content .149% or 1.49% Also, has anyone tested a Cadillac block or heads from the early to mid 70s, which had "high nickel content" and is very hard compared to other blocks from GM ?
Is the defect in what I see, or what I'm seeing with ?

did they do a tissue paper and balsa wood test on the chinese block! ? It would of won out on that test.
This chinese stuff is real garbage.

It would be interesting the see this test done on many of the 50's and 60's hp engines. Those old blocks feel much different in the bore/hone process than the later stuff let alone the el chepo blocks.

That made my indian cry, we as americans must stop buying the cheapest we can and go back to quality, besides the product there has to be quality thru all the processes that make it......
