Electric piston ring grinders

Post by Fatman »

Any experiences/opinions out there about Proforms electric ring grinder? Any good or not?

What are people using and what have you thought.

Wondering if it is worth stepping up from using a manual grinder. Application is for typical street/strip V8s.

Thanks in advance

Anyone have experience with the diamond wheels, instead of the stick on sandpaper ?

I bought the ProForm grinder a few months ago(Sallee Chevrolet, <$175). Fiddled with it a bit to tighten up the gibbs, cleaned and lubed it, started it up, and the indicator needle became invisible due to the vibration of the rather thick, unbalanced grinding disk. I then replaced the disk with one of .031 thickness, and it was at least useable. However, I build less than 6 engines per year these days, and for that it is fine. If I had to use it weekly, I would invest in a better tool.

Don't believe they have a site & unless you are using it all the time it is pretty spendy but top of the line.
ABS are super folks, Linda & Gary are great to deal with.
They make a number of really neat tools & equuipment like head assembly benches, soda blast equipment & lots of balancing stuff.
They have a catalog & also publish the Trader magazine.

Everything is fine & the usual zoo around here (pun intended  ) very busy.

I'd put you to work but the commute would be a bitch,,,,

I purchased the Proform earlier this year. I wouldn't recommend it if you're doing more than a few motors a year. I had the warped wheel plus the wheel moves back and forth due to endplay in the motor. Basically, you can fix it up and make it usable.
