I guess Chevrolet, the people that designed the SBC, doesn't really know what they are doing. They put a HV pump in all of their 604 crate motors with a stock pan. I'll take a little too much oil pressure any day over not enough.

Normally this happens when the thrust bearing wears out. It allows the crank to move forward and hit the first thing in the way. Yours doesn't look like it in the pic but it could have been cleaned up to where it doesn't show.

I don't know your specific situation but on early C4s I worked on you had to have the studs for the converter in the holes on the flywheel when you pull them together.
