Measure the piston. With the lower skirt dinged up like it looks, most likely the skirt is collapsed.

My experience with big block high volume pumps is that they really flood the top end with oil. I never use one without using positive type style valve stem seals or it will pull a lot of oil through the valve guides. The need for a high volume pump obviously depends on how the engine is going to be ...

Most engines I've ever run on the dyno, including several pulling engines, make best power at 40 degrees.
Your engine may like slightly less or slightly more, but this would be a good starting point IMO.
