Re: Mallory Dist problems
not sure if this applys to your dist, but had a mallory dist [years ago so dont ask] that did same thing, took it apart and found centrifical advance parts were installed upside down making it retard timing as revs increased, only noticed this by studying how it should function, reversed some parts ...

Re: v twin crank pin damage
the bottom of the pin is "the top of the pin" when the pistons at bottom dead center[bdc], check cyl bore with a dial bore gage , see if the rings or anything else is getting pinched when the crank is trying to push the piston "up" from BDC, pistons dwell a long time at bdc with ...

Re: carbon fiber push rods and wrist pins
i installed carbon fiber pushrods back in the 80s, they broke just cranking over the engine, the steel end at the top where it broke, wedged open the rocker arm, keeping the valve open, driving a titanium valve thru the dome of a handmade piston, which is not a good thing,

Re: Antique H-D engine question
you are the one making stuff up, i wasnt telling him to use a certain oil in winter, i was correcting you in your use of the world "weight", when in fact the "w" on the can refers to the word "winter" , look it up, and just because a vane pump doesnt break [except sprin...

Re: Antique H-D engine question
yes, viscosity of synthetic 50w flow resistence vs conventional 50w flow resistence is easily observed by pouring each into a pan at the same time, the old 50w [winter not weight] will take longer to empty, thinner synthetics can cavitate in spur gear pumps, and vane pumps are less reliable , and dis...

Re: Antique H-D engine question
synthetics are too thin in my opinion, the factory oil pump spur gears can just spin & not force oil thru the engine when useing too thin of an oil, modern gerotor gears do a better job of that, a synthetic rated at 50w does not have the viscosity of a conventional 50w, ,,,,,,,,2 important thing...

Re: Hemi dragengine failure : please advise (pictures)
certainly cant be a nitro or methanol engine useing a .100-.125? wall toolsteel? wristpin,,,,, and as clean as the chamber & piston dome are of gasoline combustion residue & heat, this doesnt appear to have run much more then a few minutes,, without more pictures, im lookin at failure of con...

Re: Hemi dragengine failure : please advise (pictures)
it appears to me the center aluminum piece is put there not at all for strength, but to support some wrist pin button ,which slips over it,,,,, to keep wrist pin centered & installed,,,,, which looks like a better idea then useing solid pin buttons ,,which are only supported by the pin hole, &am...

Re: Hemi dragengine failure : please advise (pictures)
this reminds me of being dumb enough to try carbon fiber pushrods on what was a bullet proof reliable engine 25 years ago, just cranking it over snaped a pushrod,,,,,,,,, pushrod piece jambed rocker open driving a titanium valve thru a handmade piston, & i was done for the day ,,, manf offered r...

never heard of hellfire, im talkin rings in general, & believe most, if not all american rings are made by speed pro or hastings, and reboxed by other companys with diffrent names, but im not up to date on most stuff,,

Re: HELLFIRE RINGS 2ND RING DIRECTION HELP !!(PICS INSIDE)
id say dot up, bevel up on top ring, bevel up on 2nd [if it has no dot,] dot on top of top ring may only identify it for top groove because it has a coating on its face ,like moly,& is intended for top groove,,,,,,,,, and second ring has no dot cause its plain face, no coating, & no dot,but ...

Re: HELLFIRE RINGS 2ND RING DIRECTION HELP !!(PICS INSIDE)
had same ? 30 yrs ago, & put a bevel dwn in 2nd groove, horrendous smoke, i believe a reverse torsion ring , which is intended to have its bevel dwn when placed in 2nd groove, would always have a dot on the flat surface [opposite of beveled side] to indicate it is in fact a reverse torsion ring ...

Re: round track engine smoking on decel
you can ruin a seal by over compressing your springs & retainers during installation, crushing seal with retainer,,,, ultra thin synthetic oils also go by your rings easier , also,, look in your exhaust ports to see if there all wet , or just 1 or a few to help pinpoint problem, ,, ,
